I usually have no interest at all in tv drama (including stuff based on real life, like this), but it's going to be interesting in seeing how this is handled. I don't trust media at all. I think there's been a conscious effort for a while now to make black men objects of derision for black women and make black women as unpalatable as possible to black men, building on ground-level grievances between the two. I wonder if this would be the focus of a movie at all if he hadn't been accused by a bw and then ended up with a ww as the love of his life. Call me crazy, but I've seen too much obvious manipulation in media to think this is of interest just because it's "inspirational". Dude barely even made the team, so the central focus has to be the villainy of the chick who took him down. On another note, that is a fine female he's now with, and I'm glad that he didn't turn out bitter ad is able to move forward in grand style. I hope he can parlay his story into a fulfilling life for himself, in spite of the years wasted. Living well is the best revenge.
The interest in this story more than likely has to do with the innocence project...the fact of the matter is that people get convicted of crimes they didn't commit...many of these cases are funded by volunteers...media interest in these stories is important
Based on what? Do you find it far fetched that media is doing that kind of thing? Do you find it hard to believe that media pits black men and women against one another? (and other groups against blacks?) Do you believe media is all just innocent entertainment and advertising? I don't think you do. Distrust in media is healthy, not paranoia.
If you want to refer to the overwhelming stories on "interrace" crimes fine I'd agree but like FG said this is a project innocence case that got covered. The person who did him wrong so happened to be black but this was a compelling story that's happened to so many dudes who play sports. Its a great cautionary tale its not a media angle sorry fam like I said on this topic you sound paranoid.
Well, how I "sound" is neither here nor there. You either trust media or you don't. You either believe that media pits people against black people or you don't. Let's not forget the old saying: "it ain't paranoia if they're really out to get you" As such, I wonder if this would be the focus of a movie at all if he hadn't been accused by a bw and then ended up with a ww as the love of his life. And it will be interesting to see how that aspect will be handled, will it not? And "cautionary" how? Caution: don't take a plea deal? "Compelling" how? If his return had been more triumphant, maybe. But it wasn't. Seems like media is making more of this story than they need to. There are likely more compelling "innocence project" stories out there. All this leads me to wonder about the motives.
This story was highly publicized because of the million dollars she got from LA county because of her lie as well as him getting an NFL tryout afterwards. And the cautionary tale here is young men with shit to lose be very careful of which women you are alone with. ALWAYS have witnesses around, its sad but a very real reality. And I don't think its a zero sum thing with media "either you trust them or not". I trust them to promote their own agenda first and foremost but I do think they do cover good things from time to time. It's like saying either you trust people or you don't. Some I do and some I don't and of those I do not all the time but there are times when I do.
The highlighted part could more easily be described as "delusional and paranoid" than what I wrote. ("I think there's been a conscious effort for a while now to make black men objects of derision for black women and make black women as unpalatable as possible to black men, building on ground-level grievances between the two. I wonder if this would be the focus of a movie at all if he hadn't been accused by a bw and then ended up with a ww as the love of his life. Call me crazy, but I've seen too much obvious manipulation in media to think this is of interest just because it's "inspirational". Dude barely even made the team, so the central focus has to be the villainy of the chick who took him down.")
I think this is one of the more compelling project innocence cases, given that what TDK said. The accuser received 1.5 mill from the school. She was caught on tape after Brian's release she made it up, but was afraid she 'had to give the money back'. Brian had a scholarship to USC. Then came out with flying colors, getting second chances, a tryout with NFL, etc. Of course its one of more compelling stories. People love an underdog coming up on top story. This one was picked up as a movie because it had media coverage, for the obvious reasons. It creates so many feelings in people, ranging from rage to sadness. There has not been a similar story in a long, long time getting this coverage. I think it is great that is made into a movie, getting some attention to all those that are in prison although they are innocent.. And the efforts by the innocent project and others to release and exonerate. This story really pulls at people heartstrings and I think Brian's person is a part of that.
There had been many stories that have dealt with the same issue. Not many of these cases get the movie rights, but they are revisited and retold on Investigation Discovery. I am glad it is over for Brian Banks.
Says you. I called the false accuser a black bitch and I stand by that assessment. That big block from Montclair State who lied in her grand jury testimony against me was also scurvy black bitch. Question: Where was your boyfriend while this assault was allegedly taking place? Answer: Oh . . . my boyfriend . . . yeah . . . uh . . . um . . . he was in the front of the room . . . the back of the room . . . the front of the room? If only I could turn back time . . .
I don't care about your accuser. I called you pathetic for generalizing all black women as evil bitches. You're no better than the millions of people on this planet who generalize black men as scum.
Latest news on this guy is he just got offered and excepted a front office position in the NFL's football operations department, he will be a manager and on game days assist in the officiating department. So even though he will never play a down in the NFL he still will have some sort of career in professional football.
