Ok, so a swedish guy just made a coffee table bible/-magazine, well, thats great isnt it? Well, there is a catch. It contains illustrations, or rather photos. The american version is sencored, they for example took out the picture of two men kissing, the picture of Victoria Silfstedt in revieling clothing and a picture of a pair of beautiful legs.. In sweden the only complaint was that it was too expensive, in USA there have been complete panic over this modern version of retelling the stories of the new testament.. Söderberg argues: " “Most people have issues with the Bible,” Söderberg says. “They have never gotten into it. They don’t find it accessible. But it’s our history, our heritage. And for most of us, we relate to it more than we think. Religious or not, it shapes much of our moral codes.” “The Book” project seeks to eliminate this inaccessibility by presenting the Old Testament in magazine format. “There are millions of magazines sold every month across Europe, so this format is familiar to many people,” Söderberg says. “It’s closer to the way people read today. People prefer a text that is journalistically laid out: split into articles, with headlines, quote boxes, pictures and captions. This way they can more easily pick the parts they’re interested in reading.” " Heres some of the illustrations: Article about it. The web page about the project.. What do you think about this?
I like it too, i never got to actually reading either the bible or the quoran or any of those texts, and since it IS part of my cultural heritage, I get guilt attacks over that the whole time. This is the perfect format.. Still love it that they had to censor it for the states. Oh, it's such a Land of freedom. *dripping of sarcasm*
After having read an entire (well almost) version as a young boy in Nigeria, I can appreciate how this version would be more interesting compared to the version I read with black-white hand-drawn pictures and long verses. I wonder if this is also an attempt to get more westerners (and non-westerners) into reading the bible (at least the New Testament). Revive Christianity, so to speak. Anyhoo, I quit Christianity (Catholicism) in 1997, just dawned on me one day in church that I wasn't feeling it, that and the myriad inconsistencies I found with the Bible, the Lost Books, and the Apocrypha.
Söderberg argues that the need for it is more based on the fact that it is part of our culture, and as a part of that it's important to know and understand it, at least since quite big parts of our moral/ethical codes are based on religion.. If I'm not wrong, he himself isn't a christian. So, from his side, this is not about recruiting to religion, but to make a bridge between modern visual culture and foundations of western society.. At least thats how I understood them. My parents are atheists, I think I believed in "something" until I was eight and my brother looked at me and went "you know, the only thing that happens when you die is that you get eaten by maggots".. I can picture you sitting in church and thinking "That's it, I've had it, I'm outta here.", lol. I'd like to read the Apochryphian texts someday... I just need to get through all other books on my list first.
WOW, if they can get Lucifer to read the Bible they have really accomplished something!! I'm impressed!! Pun intended!! As distasteful as it is for most straight American's to see 2 men "kissing", it is in the Bible, so the picture would have been appropriate if it were in the appropriate passages. What ever it takes! Good for him! I'll be watching the book stores to see what it reads like.
Wow anything that makes it easily accessable has got to be a good thing, id like to see this, it a great way to make something easier to read,
