I had read about the recent passing of actor Frank Thornton. He is best known for playing the part of Captain Stephen Peacock, the floor manager in the classic Are You Being Served?. He was 92. Do any of you have a favorite British show old or current?
I loved AYBS. Awesome humor. I hated Dr. Who, could not stomach that show...I loved the Dave Allen Show (an old comedy) and Benny Hill. I prefer the U.S version of The Office to the original British version, and I love their news which I listen to nightly on NPR and watch when I can on cable, because they report the news (aka just the facts ma'am) instead of this editorial slanted garbage the US often does.
I loved Dr. Who. Tom Baker will always be my favorite Doctor. John Pertwee was the ass-kicking Doctor. Peter Davison's Doctor was interesting. Sylvester McCoy was a little more physical. I also watched Doctor In The House/Doctor At Large, Mind Your Language, The Dave Allen Show, Morecome & Wise, Monty Python's Flying Circus and Benny Hill. Benny was called "The Lad" on his show. But in America and the rest of the world, he was "The Man." It was a shame that Thames Television, a company he helped put on the map worldwide fired him.
Thanks for the news Gorath. He would be missed. He was in that other show Summer Wine as well. I like ARBS,Keeping all Appearaces(the actor who played Onslow died last year),Eastenders, and others I will put on a list later.
I liked Keeping Up Appearances. EastEnders is cool, too. I just LOVE Kat Slater(Jessie Wallace). Chef!(with Lenny Henry) was funny, too. I also recommend Wire In The Blood, The Last Detective, Midsomer Murders, MI-5(Spooks in the BBC) and Murder In Suburbia(Caroline Catz and Lisa Faulkner are cute and hot).
Red Dwarf, Fry & Laurie, Black Adder, Outnumbered, Luther, Miranda, Coupling, The IT Crowd, Murphy's Law, The inbetweeners, The vicor of dibley, Absolutely Fabulous, Wire in the Blood, Dr Who, Deadly 60, Any David Attenborough doco, Teachers, Brittas Empire, QI....and the list goes on. British TV (in my opinion) is far superior to American and Australian TV. I adore it.
Red dwarf is the shiiiieeeet! The young ones, black adder, are you being served, Fawlty towers, David Norton, little Britain. British humor is the best!
I started watching it when I was little. I watched Monty Python. I didn't understand it, but I loved Terry Giliam's animation scenes. I watched Benny Hill before middle school. It wasn't until high school I discovered Dave Allen, Morecome & Wise, The Two Ronnies, Not The 9'Clock News and others. For us in high school British programming offered a little more than what we had in the 80's and is still that way now. What I loved about it was that you have to listen carefully to the dialogue because it was both subtle and not so subtle. That's what made it fun to watch.
I could not get enough of the Spam sketch, the "NOBODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION!" sketch and The Lumberjack Song.
I had never seen Not the 9 o Clock News only its American version Not Necessarily the News on HBO,other brit shows that are my faves are Desmond's,Skins,Dave Allen At Large,Law & Order UK,Benny Hill, and Luther.
