......No one ever questioned that there could not be altruism among atheist.......What a classy, thorough, superbly written piece in an attempt to reach-out, add clarity, and maintain the peace with your brother....God can use that kind of heart in his camp...........

The atheist who 'believes' there is no god leaves room for the possibility of the existence of god, which by definition makes them agnostic.

That don't work as agnostics don't 'believe' that God dies not exist.

Lol, can't help chuckling, its getting complicated:)

That's the point of deep philosophical discussion love.

As a scientist what are your thoughts?

    About what specifically?

I believe in god I guess my belief is a bit of a mash up of Christianity and Buddhism.

    Quite true.

Belief (even in the non-existence of god) is for non-atheists. :p

Thanks, Arch. Life is too short for needless antagonism. I get enough of that from my ex-wife. LOL!

I only read up to page 7 of this thread so far (and I didn't watch any of the videos), and I have to agree with this.

All of the scientists hundreds of years ago did experiments to "prove" what already existed (like gravity, etc). So it was there all along before people "realized" it was there.

I would also like to bring up how the ancient peoples started burying their dead (posing them and putting grave goods with them) thousands of years before we had civilizations (and organized religions).

    It makes me wonder.

Things like this make me feel okay about believing not only in science but also in a higher power.

    Not true....

    From dictionary.com

    Atheism:

    1. The doctrine or belief that there is no God.
    2. Disbelief in the existence of a supreme being or beings.

    Agnosticism:
An intellectual doctrine or attitude affirming the uncertainty of all claims to ultimate knowledge.

And Agnosticism from The World English Dictionary:

A person who claims, with respect to any particular question, that the answer cannot be known with certainty.

As an atheist, I have always been uncomfortable with the idea of 'believing' there is no god as opposed to simply letting the sciences work it out. Perhaps that is not atheism, but something different altogether, i.e. 'Science-ism', lol.

Words can always be misplaced. I'd say if you want to define atheism, it's simply rejecting or lacking the belief in a supreme being or set of deities. The word "belief" is just a tacked on definition by some people who aren't too keen on semantics.

My son considers himself an agnostic. He has the science mindset, but he does believe in God, creation, etc. But he doesn't feel like God or the Bible is relevant to every day life. That just comes from a lifetime of observing suffering on a personal level and how God seems absent or uncaring. But he doesn't really fit the dictionary definition so not sure where to categorize him.

The dictionary definition can only explain so much, but to break it down, he would be considered more of an agnostic-theist based on your description of him. He affirms the existence of a higher power, but can't really determine what it is, yet he holds a secularist worldview.

So what are you if you believe in something bigger than you? But not a fundamental entity known as God?
I'm talking a long the lines of the second known discovery of the Higgs Boson.
It's out there but I'm pretty sure that unless you've cut through all the misinformation and illusion, it isn't what we think it is.

    And now...
    Stupid jokes time.

What did the agnostic, dyslexic insomniac do?

Stayed up all night wondering if there really was a Dog.

    *drums*

    You're welcome.

Then you'd be identified as a Deist.

    And the Higgs Boson?

    I'm a deist?

I'd rather be an aeist or a beist.
I certainly don't want to be an feist...

    Yes. Imma dork.

Hahaha, they are two separate things dear. And yes, as a deist, you believe in a higher power, but not quite what you may define as a God.

As for the Higgs Boson, you're just a scientist or a person with a scientific mind who hold inquiries about the universe.
