Am I the only one watching this? I love this shit!!!! The opening ceremony was easily one of the best spectacles I've ever seen...
I watched the Clean-N-Jerk ( of course) powerlifting event watching those little guys lift that weight, made me want to go to the gym again, instead of lifting at home... you know..to see what everyone else is lifting and sh*t (like that one dude who's always there when you are...and you know he's going to be lifting some really heavy-ass weights) I wanted to watch the Judo and Taekwon-Do events, but they don't get the same american fan-faire as boxing, track and field, swimming, etc I'm trying to find a TV schedule for those events and no dice so far
I have full blown Olympic fever!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate it because the only reason the opening was as good as it was is because they starved half of their population to pay for the fireworks! Morally wrong, yes, but sweet jesus that was something! I watched USA v China today in basketball Watched Phelps go for medal #1 ( World Record nice touch) I will live, eat, breathe next to my tv for the next few days!
dude, i'm obsessed!!! during this time of the year - i eat, breathe, and sleep olympics! it's all i've watched since friday, and for the next 12 or 13 days - it's all i'll be watching! USA!! USA!! USA!!
I was happy to see those knuckleheads blowout China in B-ball.. especially after our lackluster performance in 2004.. maybe we'll take gold this year
Boxing being my favorite sport, it's difficult for me to watch the Olympics because America hasn't sent a team worth following in a number of years. We've had a few fighters who've made a little noise in recent years (David Reid arguably being the last) but 'taint like it used to be.
Phelps is amazing. What an athlete. The men's 4X200 won their qualifying heat in world record time. They had a brotha on the squad as well for the first time. Bench warmer, but on the squad none the less, so he gets a medal. 2 best swimmers were on the bench so when it cranks up for the finals with Phelps on the squad that is going to be amazing! That record will be shattered. I am Canadian and used to swim on the Canadian national team. Our glory days in the pool are over (sadly) so I gotta give credit where credit is due. USA is ruling the pool in '08.
hehehe....yes, USA rocks, dude...lol spoken like a typical, arrogant american, eh? but i will have you know, vanilla....that i always root for canada (and australia) after the my native land...hehe. so, i got your back, girl!!
American boxing is a joke period because the amateur ranks aren't as well-funded as they used to be. Other than basketball, boxing is my favorite sport as well. A lot of the bigger black men who might've tried their hand at boxing, go into football instead. Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones, and other elite boxers are or near retirement, and are not being replaced by a younger crop of talent.
That's a big co-sign on that! :smt023 I love the Olympics and have watched them every night!! Gymnastics are my favorite. And now my daughter wants to take gymnastics. I'll sign her up and see how long her interest lasts (she's only 5). My eyes are glued to the TV for the next several days! Go Team USA!!
Amen! The money is better in other professional sports. Can't say I blame them for going in that direction. But I don't root for Americans in professinal boxing. In the paid ranks, I could care less about a fighter's nationality. That's not the case where the Olympics is concerned.
...which is why many world-class athletes learn a few combat arts, and go into Mixed-Martial Arts. Olympic training is known to be very grueling, but the monetary payoff just is not there. They figured that, if they're going to push themselves to be the best, they may as well be payed like the best.
Thanks girl! We have a shot at the gold in the 100 mens freestyle but the rest is slim pickins! We need all the cheering we can get! Go Canada!
Agreed. While I'm not into mixed-martial arts, it's sport that's very popular world wide and it's quickly developing into more than just a niche sport in the USA. So there's money to be made. However, I don't have to like it. It pisses me off that my favorite sport can't be seen on network television. And the fact that they generally don't get paid well means there will be no influx of talent for the foreseeable future. Having said all that, I may actually watch a little of the Olympics to see just how bad the American team does in boxing. I do find the rest of the sports interesting but only as an offshoot of American success in boxing.
I have Olympic fever! I didn't even see this thread until today! I love the olympics! Gymnastics is my favorite! Usa was awesome! And swimming is pretty awesome too!!!! Go USA!
I caught a 2 minute womens Judo highlight on Comcast-OnDemand, but that didn't really quell my appetite. It's such an intricate event, like wrestling and boxing, but gets so little attention in the US. Michael Phelps ass is plastered everywhere, with constant reminders to watch US swimming. Same with the track and field. I did catch some fencing tho. That was pretty badass.
