SAN DIEGO (AP) -- A student at the University of California, San Diego admitted hanging a noose in the school library less than two weeks after an off-campus party mocking Black History Month ignited racial tensions, authorities said Friday.
The discovery prompted a rally at the school already roiling with resentment over perceived intolerance.
The noose was found dangling from a light fixture on the seventh floor of Geisel Library on Thursday night, authorities said. A University of California statement said a student admitted she and two other people were responsible. The statement did not identify the students or their race or include a motive.
UC and campus authorities did not indicate whether the students would be charged with a hate crime. Under state law, hanging a noose to terrorize is punishable by up to a year in jail.
"Whatever the intent of the authors of this act, it was a despicable expression of racial hatred, and we are outraged," the UC statement said. "It has no place in civilized society, and it will not be tolerated."
To blacks, a noose recalls the days of widespread racism and lynchings.
Hundreds of students rallied for several hours outside the university administration building, where speakers denounced the noose as an example of intolerance on the campus where blacks comprise less than 2 percent of the student body.
"How am I supposed to walk into that building? How am I ever going to be safe there?" said ethnic studies major Cheyenne Stevens, who is black.
Mustafa Shahryar, 21, said he had seen the noose as he left the library.
Shahryar, who is from Afghanistan, told the crowd he grew accustomed to racial slurs while growing up in Southern California but was stunned to see the noose.
"Nothing phased me until last night," he said. "I just took that noose as an attack on all of us."
The school has been in turmoil over an off-campus "Compton Cookout" party organized by some students that urged people to dress as ghetto stereotypes and promised there would be chicken, watermelon and malt liquor.
Chancellor Marye Anne Fox condemned the party, and the school began an investigation to determine if any students might face discipline. The school also initiated a campus-wide "Battle Hate" campaign.
Campus administrators held a "teach-in" against intolerance on Wednesday. the same day hundreds of students from UCSD and other universities staged a campus protest, demanding that officials make more efforts to combat racism.
Some students countered that the reaction to the party had been overblown. Others accused the campus Black Student Union of using it to push demands for more black professors and funding for ethnic studies.
Last week, the Associated Students president pulled funding from a student-run TV station after The Koala -- a campus media outlet with a reputation for being offensive -- came out in support of the party, called black students ungrateful and used a derogatory term for African-Americans during a program.

And people wonder why some shit happens.

You instigate and expect someone not to be offended?

Stop trying to be 'innocent' when you entice a reaction.

A few people can really mess things up for a lot of other people.

As much as something like this annoys me I seriously don't see the big deal anymore. I understand its a reminder of a hurtful history but it should be treated like any other crime without the outrage. People like this seek attention so let's stop giving it to them. The student committed a crime and like lippy said he should be expelled for violating what I'm sure is against school policy and have to pay a heavy fine. Jail time for hanging a noose is ridiculous, no one got hurt and the noose was taken down so how would this student going to jail serve the public interest?
We gotta get past being so hurt by this horse shit, it's immature and in case you guys haven't noticed its getting us no where fast.

the reason jail time would be appropriate is because this is considered a hate crime...although ridiculous to you, you are not attending that school right now as a black student...if you were, i think you might view this differently...you are right in the fact no one was physically hurt...but was there no harm done? if you let someone just get away with something like this...it is very possible that the behavior will escalate

Part of the reason hate crime laws exist is that the type of person who does something like this will continue doing worse and worse things until they are stopped.

I'd rather they got to jail now than hear about whatever evil shit they decide to do to some innocent Black person next.

I never said let them get away with it I said expulsion and a heavy fine would suffice. I get the whole fear thing trust me I've lived it many times but with people like this trust me all they're looking for is attention if they were truly hateful it would have manifested into something violent not just a noose to rile people up. I definitely dont agree with the whole hate crime thing either. Racial ethnic and religious motivated crimes won't be stopped by calling them hate crimes, I don't see how charging them more excessively will change anyone's mind. I think murder is murder, theft is theft and differentiating it based on race or anything else helps to continue the divide and its really hard to prove.

so you think the noose was meant for the debate club? expulsion and a heavy fine won't do anything for kids that have parents with deep pockets...a felony on your record may keep these people from being hired by your company and end up at the desk sitting next to you

If you want to argue the rich kid angle then one could argue that them having money would keep them out of jail anyway because they have the money to hire a good lawyer who easily argue the intent was poor taste not incite bodily harm especially since some no one was hurt. Most people who do this non sense are just attention seeking and truthfully you can't legislate or control people's thoughts. By constantly allowing people to point out differences and us focusing on it only drives us further apart as a people. Lippy you can't beat my logic on this one.
