I read some of those White South Africans went to Oz. I bet some of the daughters of those folks are in competition with the local Aussie women over brothers.

 

One of the vets I work with is from South Africa.

Hey how hard or easy is it for an American trained worker to go to Joberg and settle? Is it easy to get extened work visa and stuff?

 

Honestly being Aussie citizen I'm not sure personally.

For us it is very easy due to commonwealth etc.

I expect it is not difficult if you secure employment first.

You might rather live in cape town or Pretoria though

Close to home

Hey there. I just find this thread close to home. (pun intended). As a South African I've also been wondering how the world at large views South Africa. I love my country so much despite the political and social angst that we face as a nation.

This comment from one of the members on this site just made me laugh:

S.A is far from that in fact, if anything, I've heard of more violent attacks from the use of knives than guns...Anyway in terms of IR dating I've had a couple during my time but in all honesty it's still a major issue in the small towns here in SA...My friends and I have always had this discussion on this issue and felt that the likes of America and the majority of the European countries are the forerunners in terms of the IR dating scene.

I spent some time in Cape Town for the last 2yrs which was indeed a totally different side to South Africa in general. I come from a small town on the coast where IR dating is shunned upon but in Cape Town it's received with open arms. Cape Town is such a beautiful, cosmopolitan city basking in such rich culture and prestige. It's definitely a part of South Africa that I recommend to anyone who is looking to visit.

Funny story: during my time in Cape Town, each semester I'd meet a whole new batch of exchange students from the States who would be eager and open minded to IR. This gave me and my friends the impression that Americans are totally open to IR. I mean segregation was abolished more than 40yrs ago in the States whereas here in SA it was abolished in 1991 (ironically the year I was born) and we became a democratic country in '94. So in essence I'd imagined the States being well ahead in terms of IR dating but this site has made me aware that this is not truly the case at all,which (in all honesty) has disappointed me. Sure law and reality are two totally different things as in you can legislate "togetherness" yet there is no guarantee that people will abide by the legislation. But still the 40+ years should account for some progress, right?

During my high school years I also spent a year studying in Europe and noted that the IR scene there is well received. In fact it's not even an issue. You and your IR partner can walk around and the general public will receive you well. My time in Cape Town has given me that same feeling again . That feeling as if I am in Europe and its not even an issue that I am dating out of my culture. From what I've heard Johannesburg's IR scene is also taking strides and is being received with open arms...

Im fairly young and its not really an issue among people my age. The main problem though is the older generation who still have pre-'91 mentalities and don't want their children to date across the culture divide. But as I've noticed the social barriers are being broken. If you are like me and enjoy the relaxed lifestyle and living on the coast, I recommend you go to Cape Town. On the other hand if you are corporate minded and into the fast life Johannesburg is the place for you.

I am really proud to be apart of this new generation coming up that's changing the mindsets of the older generation in terms of integration here in SA and within a couple of years I believe we as a nation will be seen as one of those power-heads like England and Germany in terms of spear-heading the IR scene... So visit SA you'll love it guaranteed...(sorry for the long comment.)

 

Great post :smt023.I agree with you 100%, Cape Town is very beautiful. If I could, I would move there in a heartbeat but as for now I'll remain in the Land of Gold.
