CBS analyst apologizes after telling panel he's there 'to bring white man's perspective' to the coverage:

CBS analyst Doug Gottlieb got coverage of the NCAA tournament's Sweet 16 off to an awkward start last night as he joked that he was there to bring the 'white man's perspective' to the network's pregame show.

Gottlieb made the remark during a pregame segment before the Marquette-Miami game on a panel with Greg Gumbel, Greg Anthony, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley - who are all black.

Sitting in the middle, Gottlieb said: 'I don't know why you guys ask me, I'm just here to bring diversity to this set, give kind of the white man's perspective,' he said during the show.

I don't think an apology is necessary, my problem is this: Does it really matter what ethnicity a panelist is? What is he trying to say with that statement? Do white people have some type of alternate vision when it comes to sports teams?

Just an odd thing to say, What different perspective could his race grant him? It's basketball for gods sake.

 Much ado about nothing. This shit waters down the real racism and turns people off.

    I just thought of something:

    What if the reverse happened?

What if a black guy came on the panel for a hockey team and said "I'm just hear to give a Black Man's perspective?

Do you guys think he would receive criticism?

I think most would just laugh it off or ignore it.

I think in all sports, there is going to be the view of the game from a perspective of somebody. Rush Limbaugh was a good example. He was giving his observations from a "white man's point of view" and was gone. In an episode of The Boondocks called Ballin' the sports commentators say, "Now to nigga on the court." The funny thing about televised and radio sports is that the commentators are both the scholars of the game(they are either sports writers or athletes)and the voice of the fans. I do not see anything racist here.

    pretty much.............

blacks joke about race all the time..about being the 'token' black, darkest face in the room or whatever else you can think of

white guy takes a stab at it and :smt073

meanwhile, racist FDNY guys go on 'destructive' racial rampages with pictures of hitler and shit

more attention needs to be on that type of shit IMO and not some George Carlin standup

Agree with the comment Bliss made; "much ado about nothing"

What we have here is a guy that clearly is not very clever not at little stabs of whit and dry humor. The guy put his foot in his mouth and things got awkward. It appears that perhaps a few on the set may have become a little uncomfortable with the comment, however I believe it had more to do with the comment being broadcasted over live tv. I'm glad CB had the courage to speak up and support the guy.

Still it's fucked up that a White guy makes a joke about being a minority on a studio set and his statement is almost considered racist.

You know some uptight asshole called ESPN and was bitching about what Gotlieb(?) said.

Even when the White guy is the ONLY one among several Black dudes on set, he's still considered the 'majority'lol.
