I don't have any problems with Jolie playing the role. This really isn't anything new. Here are some examples:

In Spike Lee's movie "Summer of Sam", John Leguizamo, who is Colombian, played the role of an Italian

Jamie-Lynn Sigler of the Sopranos plays the role of an Italiana when she's actually of Cuban-American heritage

A black American played the role of a Dominican in the Shaft movie

Dominican Alfonso Ribeiro played the role of a black American on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air

There have also been countless biracial roles in movies that were played by light-skinned blacks who were not biracial

The biracial Halle Berry has played the role of black women in her movies.

Oh, and how could I forget all the whites (from Charlton Heston on down) who have played the roles of Native Americans in the Westerns.

I just see it as acting and what really matters is her performance. Besides, Jolie looks as if she could be biracial herself. Gratuitous Angelina Jolie pic:

I agree... but I do think that Halle would have been great, but maybe she was busy or didn't want the role! Who knows!?

Quite frankly if Mariane Pearl does not have a problem with Angelina playing her, then the rest of the world needs to relax about it!

Got no problem with it. Jolie may even pull it off.

What was that awful movie that Marisa Tomei played a Cuban? This was just after "My Cousin Vinny" where she got the Oscar for best supporting actress. God damn, it was horrible. She played a cuban refugee just arrived in Miami and did terrible stereotypical shit. Somebody tell me, I'll remember, and then try to stab my eyes out again. I'm playing.

    Peace out.

I think the people opposed to Angelina playing this part are forgetting one thing: bi-racial people are half white too. And I have seen pictures of Angelina in costume and she does look remarkabley like a bi-racial woman....I think it is an awesome challenging role and it is great that she is doing it.
Mariane Pearl wanted Angelina to play her so why should people criticise this woman's choice of who she wants herself played by?

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand as long as she aint playing a black person then a biracial person is okay because she is an exotic looking white woman herself. But on the other hand what about the struggling biracial actresses trying to get work.

Im up and down like with characters who play other races as well.
Does anybody bother to ask how that race feels about someone from another race playing a character that is suppose to be their race.

Racialists would consider her biracial since her mother is Native American.

Yeah, I wonder too if anybody bothered to ask how Cubans, Dutch or French people feel about an American actress playing this character. Couldn't they find a struggeling Cuban/Dutch actress raised in France to play the role? Or anybody bothered to ask Jews and Iraqis how they feel about a non-Jewish non-Iraqi actor playing the character of Daniel Pearl?

To me it doesn't make any difference, as long as the actor/actress bears a resemblance to the character and is doing a good job.

And in this case it's only natural that Jolie is going to play the role. Why would Brad Pitt pay for another actress when he can keep the money in the family?

Could you explain what you mean?

Well....there's a lot of actors of color who are not getting the opportunities, because most of the roles go to white actors. So, when a role comes along which is based on a mixed-race character....all the actors of mixed-race heritage feel the opportunity lost to a name white actor.

IMO, Thandie Newton should have been cast in the role of Mariane Pearl...she would have nailed it.

I think since Mariane Pearl wrote this script and she personally asked Angelina Jolie to play her then there is no problem to this. Many biracial actors play people of different races. A biracial person would have been more like reality than Angelina Jolie but I am interested in seeing how she will pull off a biracial woman and I think why not let a white actress play a biracial woman?

No disrespect to the woman, but I think Mariane Pearl is one of those biracial people who wishes they were more white than black. I say that because why would she pick a angelina jolie over halle berry, thandie newton, etc. to play her in a movie.
