There's been worldwide controversy about the Dutch fashion magazine, Jackie, calling Rihanna, “De Niggabitch”. The editor, Eva Hoeke, was forced to resign over this article. She says that it was all a joke. Obviously, Rihanna didn't think it was a joke cause she tweeted: ‘Fuck you Eva’. http://parlourmagazine.com/2011/12/...e-quits-following-rihanna-niggabitch-debacle/ http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/r...ectful-desperate-racial-slur-article-1.994551 http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/45740606/ns/today-entertainment/t/dutch-magazine-calls-rihanna-n-word/ Here's the magazine's statement published on their Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/Jackie.Magazine/posts/283082028411358 The Kid Rasta
That Dutch mag was all kinds of wrong, but I bet the term 'niggerbitch' was dropped by Rihanna in a song or used in reference to herself. If Black folk go around saying shit like, " I'm the head nigger in charge!!", they shouldn't be surprised if someone else especially a foreigner gets it twisted. If you read the comments in the link posted by the OP, international listeners are totally confused by American hip hop. Why wouldn't they be?? Nigga this. Nigga that. Blah blah blah. But you better not say that shit in public 'cause you might catch a beat down from the NAACP.:-x It's hard to believe, but some foreigners just off the boat think 'nigga' is a perfectly acceptable term to call Black folk. This is what happens with ignorant rappers talk all that bullshit about reclaiming 'nigger' and turning into a term of 'empowerment'. WTF?? It was wrong to call Rihanna a niggerbitch, but I expect this type of ignorance to be perpetuated when a word like 'nigger' is status quo in 90% of hip hop/rap music.
You made some valid points, but in this case the editor should have known better. I have no sympathy for the editor at all. Anyway, she's history. The Kid Rasta
I also left out that the Netherlands has some 'race' issues. There's more going on than a simple misunderstanding of American slang.
i'm sorry but racism existed before rhianna and hip hop, so blaming them is utter nonsense. britney, lady gaga, etc doing the same thing but no one ever says anything to them. ever ethnic group has had slurs against them, but black ppl seem to be the only ones called out for something they didn't create doesn't fly. white racists are responsible for their own actions. if i run someone over with my car i can't blame grand theft auto.
"I bet the term 'niggerbitch' was dropped by Rihanna in a song or used in reference to herself" Oh really?? You're in such a hurry to play Sambo you didn't even research your own weak comment. SHOW IS PROOF SHE CALLED HERSELF NIGGERBITCH......
It's 2011/2012, and they didn't know what they were doing? C'mon now. They used TWO negative words. I don't buy anyones naiveté. They knew what they were doing and what reaction they were looking for. Probably didn't think they'd get backlash from it, but they knew it would get people talking.
No Sambo over here, King of all Blacks....I mean flaminghetero.:smt066:smt006 Rihanna calls herself a 'bitch' in her own songs,(Hard), calls other people 'bitch',(Bitch I'm Special), and has been quoted in the media calling herself a bitch about her behavior in an interview with Russell Brand. About 'nigga', listen to 'Man Down' 'G4L','Can I Endure', etc. She's very liberal in the use of the word. The point is, hip hop artists should be more conscious of the 'art' they're exporting to the rest of the globe. And I'm not surprised some Euros think the words 'nigga' and 'bitch' aren't offensive to Black folk in the USA if the only exposure they get to American Black people is through our music pop culture. Has Rihanna ever called herself 'niggerbitch'?? Not that I know of. Has she called herself a 'bitch'?? Yeah. Is she fond of the word 'nigga' in her music?? HELL yeah. Is it ironic that some ignorant,(racist) ass Dutch magazine editor took the license to combine the two words together referring to Rihanna and think it was hott?? Not really.
I just wished that Blacks don's use that word in a "term of endearment". Neither does Whites since how can you tell if that White person is dissing or endearing you? Hope those rappers take responsibility of their action in relation to that horrible word.
As someone who is not American, I have to say that the young people of today are so use to that word in music and movies that it IS very likely that they think it's just normal american slang. I mean, in Australia we don't use that term as a racist taunt towards aboriginal people and no Australian child (unless they are of American background I guess) is taught about slavery in America. I don't think they're taught ANY american history at all, unless it ties in with something to do with Australia, and why would they be? That does not mean I'm excusing what this woman allowed in her magazine. That was unacceptable and I'm not sure she wasn't aware of the meaning behind it...that's not my country so I don't know. I'm just saying that it's common use in music and some movies CAN teach non-american people (well, teens at least) that it's acceptable. You can't assume, just because YOU know and understand the background and meaning of something that everyone else does too. Ack, but I hate the word and can't stand it being used.
Yep there are a lot of people who are ignorant, unrefined and fall into the pop culture mentality and they think its okay. Its akin to the white kid who listens to a lot of hip hop, hears the term nigga over and over and so thinks their down and cool and can call a black person it as some form of endearment because they heard Lil Wayne or some rapper saying it in a song.
Gays call each other fags all the time and Mexicans love to call each other spics and beaners. Are these words acceptable to say?
oh oh Black guys use it all the time.-Laura Schlessinger after using the n-word several times!! you going out with Dr. Laura, DK? She's white. You're black. It is an interracial love fest. But just remember she expects you to say it ALL THE TIME. just like your comment about gay people. You can bring Dog the bounty hunter with you as your wingman. I agree on andreboba after seeing evidence of it. Rihanna is part of the problem and not the solution. You want people to stop saying offensive words. You have to lead by example. You'd never catch Barack Obama using the n-word. You wouldn't catch Bill ricardson using spics and beaners. come on man all the time! You very well know gays don't use that word all the time. I have never heard of a gay calling another one fag. None of them are acceptable and should not be used. tell rhinna that NAACP buried the word. While you are at it, tell the lady that got fired too.
I am not surprised. I take your word for it. In the field of international affairs, this is called 'blowback'. Malcolm X called it 'chickens coming home to roost.' Rihanna is a hypocrite.
In all fairness, Europeans that have not been here for an extended amount of time, usually don't understand the racial climate here. They may take keys from the hip-hop lingo and naively, somehow think its ok (looking at the comments that was made on those sites and I can see where that is coming from). Most Europeans however, would know that the N-word is not ok. Sweden had these chocolate balls called "negroballs" (no insinuation to the cajones, its a treat for kids), that name was changed many decades ago - since everybody got that it was profoundly wrong. So I cant really give an educated woman a pass based on ignorance. Putting the N-word and the B-word together like that, seems to me the woman knew what she was doing. I mean, in her position, no excuses. It only takes a moment of reflection to understand that its not ok, especially in the media. Groan. I give her NO excuses. Even if Rihanna called herself that on twitter, I really don't see how she thought it was ok to use. Although I think the language used in many types of music sort of desensitize people to certain words, I think everybody have to stop and think - they cant just blame the music, personal responsibility can't be ignored.
