http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/celtics/articles/2006/10/28/passing_of_a_celtics_legend/ Say what you want about the motherfucker, but he was one of the best basketball coaches of all time and the FIRST to put five black guys on the floor at the same time. Yes, he was totally abrasive and hated by his opponents (although Cousy hated him), he gave results, and let the world in one the best defenisve centers of all time, Bill Russell. Plus, he drafted one of the most underrated players of all time, though he is in the Hall of Fame. His name is John Havlicek. He coud guard anyone, run all day, and hit clutch shots. He retired in 1978, and he didn't have to, he had played 17 seasons. He missed Larry Bird's debut. Can you imagine Hondo and Bird on the same floor? Hondo would have played until he was 40. Anyhoo, Auerbach was a special, special coach to me..because like a wrestling promoter, he put Bill Russell over. Boston didn't want to see this black guy here that couldn't shoot, but Auerbach kept telling the masses that the guy is something unreal, a guy that so gifted defensively, he didn't have to score. Which was true, he only got points off Cousy lobs or offensive rebounds. Defensively, Russell was the pioneer. And Red knew it. Red was not racist at all, though Boston fans were at HIM. Stupid Jew, all that stuff. All he wanted to do was win, and hell yeah, he was arrogant. You can do that when you have the talent to win, that he built. Red was the GM in the 70s that GOT Dave Cowens (tottally underrated), Jo Jo White, and later Larry Bird. You can say what you want about who was the best coach in NBA history, and some will go with Pat Riley or Phil Jackson, but I am going with Red. Discuss away. BT RIP Red, you were the MF man.
Hmmmm...why do I have the feeling you`re from the Boston/New England area BlackTiger??? Of course if Pat Riley dies, anyone from the LA/Miami area will say he was THE BEST coach ever!!! That said, Auerbach was an incredible coach!!!! I salute him!!! Peaaaaaaaaaaace
You got it right. I am a New England native, lived here all my life except for New York City. Pat Riley is a very talented coach. Plays to his strengths of his ball club, fast break, slow-it down (Knicks). Got much love for him. But he isn't Red. Red was the godfather. Light a fatty for him, the godfather is dead. Michael
