Norwegian woman who reported being raped in Dubai is jailed for 16 months

A young Norwegian woman has been sentenced to 16 months in jail after she reported a rape in Dubai.

The 25-year-old was in the United Arab Emirates on a business trip when she was raped and reported the assault to the local police.

Dubai police did not believe her, and instead took her passport and jailed her on suspicion of having had sex outside marriage.

The Norwegian woman reported the sexual assault in March this year, after which she had to spend days in a cell before she was allowed to use a telephone.

With the help of family members, the Norwegian consulate was able to negotiate a release and she has been living under the protection of the Norwegian Sailor’s Church until her sentencing this week.

'I received the harshest sentence for sex outside marriage, harshest sentence for drinking alcohol and on top of that I was found guilty of perjury,’ the woman told Verdens Gang.

‘It is a terrible situation she is in,’ said Gisle Meling, the priest at the Norwegian Sailor’s Church.

‘We are very surprised and had hoped it would go another way, but we live in a country which has a justice system which draws its conclusions with the help of Sharia law.’

She was sentenced to one year and four months in jail but as Norway has no extradition treaty with Dubai, her future is uncertain.

The young Norwegian woman's story is not unique.

Earlier this year Australian Alicia Gali, 27, spoke of how she was thrown in a Dubai jail for eight months after she reported a rape.

Miss Gali was working at hotel chain Starwood when her drink was spiked in the staff bar.

She awoke to find that three colleagues had raped her, but when she went to a hospital for help, they turned her over to the police and she was charged with illicit sex outside marriage.

Under UAE law, rapists can only be convicted if either the perpetrator confesses or if four adult Muslim males witness the crime.

Under the Sharia-influenced laws, sex before marriage is completely forbidden and an unmarried couple holding hands in public can be jailed.

Foreigners jailed in Dubai are deported immediately after completing their sentences.

When she went to the police to report the rape, they made fun of her, asking her if she is reporting it, because the sex wasn't good.

Imagine you have to experience something like this and when you ask for help and justice, people make fun of you and send you to prison.

She lost her job too, cause the rapist was a coworker.
Her boss wanted her withdraw and when she didn't, they fired her!

Officially disgusted with men right about now.
This woman should be able to use a 17 inch strap on and rape them while asking if the sex isn't to their liking.

Sorry to say Dubai is a Persian Gulf emerite one of the United Arab Emerites which has boatloads of oil cash. Even though Norway is rich like Dubai it is not as strong like the US. Still,I hope their is talk of a boycott or protest against such horrible goings over there.

I would never go to a sharia-governed country. Nothing against Muslims, but I have a lot against theocracy.

The U.A.E has the appearance of liberals visiting but, their customs are still different in spite of their guilded surroundings.

As it's reported, it is tragic, seriously..but I've been several times in Dubai, alone and never had problems, in contrary, once an egyptian guy was very bothersome and I reported him to the Management, they reacted immediatly and very kind. But you know, people and System aren't always perfect and to go to Police in such a Country, because you've been raped is, expressed carefully, very imprudent.

Yeah, that's the reality. The reason, why I think you don't have to bring your own used justice System to another Country. You have to feel, accept and behave, what is good for you to get out of problems, without increasing them. BTW - a justice System like in most western countries or USA is the exception, compared to the most countries on the globe.

Management as in the Police, or management as in where you were.

Plus saying bothering me vs someone raped me... I think you'd have problems there, Christine.

I would keep my mouth shut, if it really happened, because I don't want to end up in jail. Not only in Dubai, in India, most african or asian countries, too. you always have to take care to prevent such situations that could involve you in shit like this

And..till now, she is not in jail, she is at a place for norwegian People, but without papers, so the case, how it'll be handeled is still open.

It doesn't matter if you feel , accept and behave to behave what is good for you when you have the sharia system, not one bit, you can do all of that and still find your ass in jail, these cases show that. I don't know why you defend it. These girls were abused twice over. If you are raper, raped, you break a law. Even if rape by definition means you did not agree.
Do you really blame these numerous women?! Really. Daterape drugs and they are still to blame?

As far as that is concerned, the news clearly stated Norway has no way of arguing this and she will go to jail. Its fucked up.

    For real.
They need to deep-kiss the sand* that they got lucky and struck oil.
    (*and choke on it)

*shudders* Heck no. Girl, all expenses paid, and still I wouldn't go there. Fuck em, there are too many beautiful AUTHENTIC culturally-rich cities on the planet to visit, instead of this fake fraud oppressive/stone-age mentality, male-worshipping place. They don't deserve your money or your patronage.
