When you bob to the beat, what do you bob to?

 

Everything I make beats. I need an example of a song

 

I guess I'm too far under these big brains around here. Ok, when you're listening to a song. You nod your head to (one) specific instrument in the beat. You may nod every second, I may nod every half a second. We're both on beat but rocking to a different beat in the same song. Fuck it. I can't explain. Lol

 

It's like the dude that's clapping on the off beat. Or is he on and everyone else is off?

I'll give you the bad boy era and some g unit stuff, but look at that style vs KRS one, Raekwon, ODB. The popular ec shit was trendier...that's why it was popular. Hard core ec rappers are not the most popular shit, except maybe in NY. I've made no bones about the fact that I'm completely biased...two minutes in the music thread and you'll know exactly where my passion lies.

I tried to find an example of what I'm talking about, but I'm nauseous at this point riffling through all that ec crap. I just clipped about 10 ec videos and the delivery of vocals is no where near as smooth as wc rappers. Outside of the vocals, the beats suck balls. Again...no where near the beats in this wc shit.

We can agree to disagree. I've already admitted to being completely narrow minded when it comes to my music!

I love hip-hop debates.

 

I don't mean to imply that California doesn't have any MCs, they have many. It's just that to me California was the beginning of the dominance of the music over lyrics. I am a huge fan of Ice-T, NWA/Ice Cube/Snoop/Dre, Digital Underground, Souls of Mischief, Dilated Peoples, Alkaholics, Jurassic 5, and, even though I hate slow rhyming, Too Short is a legend. So I have love for the West Coast. You know what's funny? There was a similar debate in 1950s-60s jazz about the hard cerebral NYC sound vs. the laid-back, breezy California sound, best exemplified by Wes Montgomery and Chico Hamilton. Cali tunes might be best for raising the roof at a house party and have much broader popular appeal, while NYC beats are better for head-nodding and breaking and appeal to intense hip hop fans. So I agree that both have their place, as do the butt-tunes from the South.
