LOL, no you're not. Hahaha... to me, in general the East has the world's most serious approach to MC'ing, hands down. Lyrics, command of the language, most literate, clever, verbal dexterity, breath control, pacing/phrasing, and subject matter. And for me, that's the essence of hip hop, having something to say that's worth listening to. And I also think that the East takes music to another level, in the same way they did with jazz. They bring an artistic sensibility to making the track, actually scratching (which seems like a lost art in the rest of the 'rap' world), extremely rare sampling and track development. To me, the East is the home of hip hop's 'classical music' and the rest of the country (with a few exceptions) makes Top 40. Nothing wrong with that, but I consider most of the rest as contemporary urban dance music. Just like I don't think of Kenny G and Najee as jazz. LOL

I actually like Nas, I think he flows fine. I could post 100 songs though where the EC rapper is simply talking...not flowing with the beat. It even sounds like they're OFF from the beat sometimes. Drives me insane. The content of EC lyrics isn't my problem at all, it's how they deliver it. But again, I'm a beat girl...so EC is definitely not geared towards my type!

I'll give you "most literate" just because I'm feeling generous and I can't think of any evidence to fight that claim right now lol. But "verbal dexterity, breath control, pacing"...lets be honest love, they do fine with breath control and pacing because they're just talking! If my little white ass can keep up with their lyrics, it can't be THAT challenging! Plus, they're not even trying to stay on point with the beat...where's the difficulty there?! I'm the queen of freestyles, and that's where I usually judge the true talent of someone's flow...WC has EC beat at every turn.

I actually like EC and their "talking", I'm not one for beats I actually listen to lyrics (shocking isn't:smt119). I don't listen to too much EC, just Meth and Red since I'm more of a Mac Dre and Luniz fan. Bay Area rap is a lot like EC storytelling rap.

Not trying to be argumentative here, but you can't seriously be comparing the Bay Area to the EC style? Bay Area rap has beats!! Ant banks, celly cell, rappin 4-tay, tupac, spice 1, keak da sneak, e40...too short?!?!?! C'mon now....they're on a different level.

WC is horribly underrated. You feel the viciousness of that muthafucka when he raps.

And yeah, I love a more musical element to my hip-hop. Basslines, chords, strings, we bring melody...G-Funk, where rhythm is life and life in rhythm. Live instruments. We got that out west. Straight funk influence.

But I gotta disagree with the East coast comment I love east coast and they invented flow. Kool Mo Dee, Big L, Slick Rick, Rakim, etc. HEAVY HITTERS. I gotta give respect where respect is due. Most west coast legends, if not all, will mention Rakim, KRS and Run-DMC as their influences. And they will mention their flow, ESPECIALLY Ra's.

It's not just the beats, BA tells a story in their raps just like EC. SoCal is pretty general just spitting rhymes story or no story. They aren't the same but there are similarities or at least I see them.

No doubt there are crazy heavy hitters from the EC...I just don't personally enjoy most of them. There are a few EC tracks I like, mostly shit from my hs years, but not many. It's just not my style. I can appreciate the impact they've had on other rappers though, including my west coast favs.

I feel you. I know I'm in the minority when it comes to my musical choices. I'm pretty narrow minded in that regard...WC or dirty south is about all I get on board with. My ex was the only other person I've ever met who was as fanatical about WC music as I am. I can appreciate that most people are more open minded and can enjoy many regions of rap! That's just not me. I don't waver on my music or my football team lol.

If you're off beat, and stay off beat you're actually on beat. It's just a different beat,, right??? West coast ex: Saafir

Haha maybe. All I know is if I can find a groove with the beat...I can't enjoy the track. It's not ONLY ec rappers I've seen this with, they're just the main culprits. Silkk The Shocker isnt ec, but he drives me insane too...couldn't find the beat to save his ass...

Silk the shocker is not a rapper *thats how poor his lyrical quality is*

Lets also not forget Mobb Deep Epmd Eric Sermon is sick dont get me started on Jigga and Big. Dudes like Canibus Beanie Segal and the incomparable J to the muah killed the flow game. As far as beats are concerned some of tge greatest and best known club bangers come from east coast rappers. Pick any Jigga album I can show ypu at least two. Remember the Bad Boy era of 97 to 98. GUnit had the xlubs on smash from 2003 to 2006. And besides hot beats there was a lot of good lyrical content with heavy base. Lean Back by that boy Joey Crack was killing the clubs in 2004 oh lets not forget Big Pun.
Hate or love it you go down any rappers list of their favorite top ten rappers most of the dudes are from the east coast and bring me any billboard list from 2005 and back and most of those hits are east coast songs except 92 to 94 when Snoop and Dre had it. Its cool to have personal preference but dint crazy now lol

Give me an example of ec rappers who are off beat. I just think youre biased

I've explained that. Off beat is on beat if you stay off beat. Ex: you bob your head to bass drum, I bob to the snare. Which is off beat?
