Yes I have a somewhat similar theory. I've watched it happen. There are a lot of transracial adoptive parents who will really go on about how beautiful black skin is. The thought process is that it will help to build self esteem for their new Black children. There are some courses that even promote such things in various requirements for those adopting "transracially". It would be pretty easy to see where a young white girl might want to get some attention when the family ends up adopting 4 Black kids. Also, many of the families who end up adopting in those situations will go overboard about "culture" and it becomes like an obsession. I see it all the time. You can often spot it when you go to adoption gatherings. In the attempt to bring the children into the family they end up putting them on a pedestal.

I can't tell you the number of classes and events I've been to where people are looking to adopt don't really have any real exposure to people of the race or culture they may end up adopting. This was a huge issue some years ago brought up by the Black Social Workers Association. But many of them will end up getting really into it all.

 

Yah I think it was someone other than you though who made the comment about the adoptive parents doing more for Black people than most Black people have done (I'm totally paraphrasing here, I'm not going back through it all LOL).

 

It's really something isn't it? I actually am wondering what Dr. Drew will have to say on this. He's usually pretty good at flagging mental health issues.
