Mr. Web-man, is private messaging ever un-disabled on this board? Or are you trying to get me/everyone else to be a paying member? Or is it a chat thing?

I think its disabled to prevent hate messages. But I think it could be enabled but with a blocking option. There are times I've really wished PMs were enabled. I'm a bit of a private person (as anyone's noticed I don't give out information abut myself) but I would like to be able to have one-on-one discussions with some members of the board in response to a post.

That is one of the reasons.

The second reason is that some people just want to join the discussion but do not want to get hit on -- or contacted outside of the website. There was a time when the PM option was enabled, but a lot of folks (especially women) refused to sign up because they'd get slammed with PMs.

The message board software only allows PMs to be on or off, and you cannot block individuals from sending you PMs. You can only change how they notify you -- by pop-up, etc. It's basically a private email account that is tied into the message board.

That said, there are many options available for people to contact each other through this site without paying. Those who wish to be contacted through the message board can set their email address to be visible for all to see. There are also options in your profile where you can allow people to instant message you through AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, and MSN. And then there's chat, which is also free to use.

Of course, opening these options in your profile allows anyone on the web (including hate groups) to contact you, or collect your email address.

How much access a person allows to themselves in the forums is totally controlled by them and not by us.

On messengers: I know Yahoo allows users to create (unlimited?) aliases i.e."other names" for Yahoo messenger account, so that any messages sent to the any of the aliases gets sent to the main ID/account. I use one such alias for this website, and I can always delete the alias whenever I want. This way, I don't have to display my original ID on a public forum -- only my friends get that one. What more, with aliases I get to avoid the headache of creating multiple Yahoo messenger ID/account's.

    To create an alias, visit:
    http://edit.profiles.yahoo.com/config/edit_identity?.redir_from=REGISTRATION

    and click on "Edit/Create Profiles"

    I'll check it out...

and, the webmaster reminds me of why I stopped displaying my e-mail address.

Well I've had hate type mail and although it's not nice, it just goes straight in the "trash" folder...precisely where the sender of it should go!

I was just about to ask this question. Shame about no PM's. :(

That is what I like to know since I see the synbol and I wonder since it is disabled can the webmaster get rid of it completely?

Here are two possibilities for that might make the PMing work

    1. Allow members to have a list of persons allowed to send PMs
    2. Enable PMing for regulars or "trusted" members only
    3. Combination of the above

That is not an option in the current message board software, but it will most likely become an option in future upgrades. Currently it can only be on for everyone or off for everyone.

However, PM's will become an option in the near future for paid members for sure -- perhaps through some other software implementation. And maybe for long term message board members.

:D I'd go for that, and have no issue with waiting until I am a "trusted member"before contacting anyone.Believe me, I am definitely not looking to private message a poster who doesn't want to be contacted.
But there are some really pretty women on this forum, and if I COULD contact them I WOULD with their permission only, though.
    Thanks.

I agree with that. It would be really nice to be able to send notes.
There could be an option to blog certain people if they disrespected and insulted you.
But hey if you got haters you're doing something right because hating is based on jealousy plus haters need a job too. :) People who can't handle haters lack a bit in self-confidence I think
