I had an interesting incident with a mixed breed(Pit Bull and something else) dog a few days ago. I was walking one morning and across the street, a puppy was walking along. It was unaware of the truck that was behind it. Luckily, the driver slowed down so that the puppy could get away. It saw me and crossed the street to catch up with me. I kept walking, hoping to get away from it. But it followed me. The pup was a female and she was very thirsty. She kept licking the grass as she walked. She had followed me all the way home and rested on the porch of my brother's house. My sister-in-law, niece, nephew and my mother were afraid to leave the house because of the dog. But, I was not afraid because she was thirsty. I grabbed a bowl of water and took it to the canal in the back of his home. She followed me there. I tried to sneak away but she followed me back to the house. I called Animal Control to pick her up, but they were reluctant to come because of where we lived. I called another place and they told me that they only pick up dead animals. I had to call the police. They arrived 40 minutes later and I stood outside on the porch with the officers and explained the situation. The puppy did nothing and was well behaved around the officers. I told them that I didn't want any harm to come to her. And because we had no place to keep her, and that there were small children in the neighborhood, she needed to be taken away. The officers noticed that she was not a threat and concurred. The county Animal Control van came and the puppy was removed without incident. The officers' sergeant arrived and he informed me that they did not normally do this and it was the job of the city to do it and what they had told me was not quite right. My sister-in-law, niece, nephew and my mother were relieved. I, on the other hand, was confused. Why did she follow me all the way home?
My mother explained, in her own way that that I'm a nice guy and the puppy knew it. My nephew brought up another possibility; the puppy was a sign or symbol of some kind. As I looked back on the incident, I knew in my heart that I didn't want anything to happen to her or other living things, even humans. All God's creatures should live.
