The Food Network chef has come under fire after revealing in a deposition that “of course” she had used the racial epithet.

Paula Deen is defending her use of the N-word, saying things were “quite different” in the South 60 years ago.

In a deposition for her current lawsuit -- in which Deen, 66, and her brother Bubba Heirs are being sued by a former employee -- Deen copped to using the racial epithet in the past, but said she wouldn't use it today.

During her deposition, Deen said that she “of course” had used the N-word before, specifically when telling her husband about a time when “a black man burst into the bank that I was working at and put a gun to my head.” TMZ notes that the incident in question occurred in 1986.

In a statement released to the media Thursday, Paula Deen Enterprises is defending the Food Network chef’s controversial revelations.

“During a deposition where she swore to tell the truth, Ms. Deen recounted having used a racial epithet in the past, speaking largely about a time in American history which was quite different than today,” the statement reads. “[Paula] was born 60 years ago when America’s South had schools that were segregated, different bathrooms, different restaurants and Americans rode in different parts of the bus. This is not today.”

The statement goes on to echo Deen’s sentiments that she “does not find acceptable the use of this term under any circumstance by anyone nor condone any form of racism or discrimination.”

Deen and Heirs are being sued by a former manager of their restaurants in Savannah, Ga. Lisa T. Jackson’s suit claims that Deen and Heir committed multiple acts of violence, discrimination and racism that resulted in the end of her five-year employment at Deen’s Lady & Sons and Bubba’s Seafood and Oyster House. Deen’s lawyer has called the allegations false.

JUST AS Paula Deen cooked and ate for years based on a menu designed before nutrition-minded folks started understanding the causes of heart disease and diabetes, her knowledge of acceptable cultural mores also seems to be stuck in an era when using the N-word was acceptable for celebrities other than rappers.

While being questioned in a discrimination lawsuit filed by former employee Lisa Jackson, Deen said she has used racial slurs in the past but insisted that she and her family do not tolerate prejudice.

The Food Network star and Savannah, Ga., restaurant owner answered questions about her racial attitudes in a May 17 deposition by a lawyer for Jackson, a former manager of Uncle Bubba's Seafood and Oyster House. Deen and her brother, Bubba Hiers, own the restaurant. Jackson sued them last year, saying that she was sexually harassed and worked in a hostile environment rife with innuendo and racial slurs.

Jackson, by the way, is white.

Agreed. "Deen said she has used racial slurs in the past but insisted that she and her family do not tolerate prejudice." Hate hypocrites.

Note: twatwaffle has been officially added to my vocabulary library. Thank you

Her excuse makes no sense; I wonder if she thinks anyone alive during the 9/11 era should call afghans sand n*****s and anyone alive during the Pearl Harbor era should call the japanese c****s without any backlash?

I can't tell you how many times I've heard something like this, it doesn't matter where you come from or what time period you're from. Hate is not acceptable. and with that, I think this woman is dumber than a pile of bricks.

    Did not see this coming.

Paula Deen has turned out to be one of the most charming, affable, comfortably racist people I've ever seen or heard about.

It's almost hard for me to imagine those words coming out of her mouth.

Damn you Oprah for hyping this bitch.:smt011

The case against her is too open and shut....there is no where to hide.....Sixty years of life experience had to tell her that even if she feels in heart that the term fittingly describes black people, a woman of stature cannot make those statements....she has to go down....

first off, the person who filed the lawsuit is white... who cares if shes used the word in the past, she did grow up in a time where things are different.

why is it when a ww uses the word in porn its ok but a chef cant use it? ha!

its funny how as a black race we can use the n word up and down in songs and to each other but soon as someone who is not in our race uses it we get offended. if the word is that bad then why don't we stop using it ourselves?

Does she have grits for brains? My sister informed me about this and I wonder does she have any sense? It is doubtful. Take for example that radio woman Dr.Laura Schlessinger who said the n-word more than once? She was born more than 60 years ago too.

Wait, I don't get the math to work. She is 66 years old. So she could not have been raised w separate restaurants for white and black and black men and women in the back of the bus. How is she using that an excuse (as if it ever was a legitimate one).

If she mea culpaed, I may have gotten over it. Now, fuck no.

Co-sign. Had she come straight out and said that she was raised as one of those hardcore confederate flag waving wishing for those "good old days" of the south southerns and over time had come to realize that was an ignorant way of thinking & living and therefore had stopped subscribing to that way of thinking a long time ago.......then all good. But coming up with excuses for why you would be saying ignorant shit to somehow legitimize it....

I just don't know what to say. It seems Paula Deen and other celebrities has their own strain of Tourette's Syndrome. They usually say, "I'm an old man or woman and I have a big mouth. I got caught up in the heat of the moment and that is what came out of my mouth." Or, "Well, I'm from the South(or from Bad Street, U.S.A.). It was segregated and we often used the word a lot among ourselves. But I don't use it now." When someone is in the public eye where one is seen by millions of people; why use such language? True, somethings are said in the heat of the moment. The question is whether or not it was intended for the individual or the group in which that individual comes from. It is difficult to determine that from the outside looking in. Having lived in the Deep South, I am not surprised.

I agree with you, I don't like the n-word with -er or -a at the end either, but this isn't your usual case of "famous person said n****r." She lives and breathes with a racist mentality, and in her words that's how she's been living for the past 60 years.
