WASILLA, Alaska – Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said Friday she is resigning from office at the end of the month, raising speculation that she would focus on a run for the White House in the 2012 race.

The former Republican vice presidential candidate made the surprise announcement from her home in suburban Wasilla on Friday morning. She said she would step down July 26 but didn't announce her plans.

"Once I decided not to run for re-election, I also felt that to embrace the conventional Lame Duck status in this particular climate would just be another dose of politics as usual, something I campaigned against and will always oppose," Palin said in a statement released by her office.

Too much pressure from the media, maybe?

Imagine if she was elected last year, would she resigned?

Not a good year to be a Republican.

wow...i just saw her speech on cnn...i find it hard to believe if she plans to have a political future that she just quit her job as govenor...as the saying goes..."if you can't stand the heat then you must exit the kitchen" if palin can't handle the media digging into her private life...doesn't want her kids in the news...doesn't want to be scrutinized by the public then she has no business in office...this is not a good year to be a republican and i cant imagine how this party will stand the test of time unless they get busy and reinvent themselves...

the one thing that i think palin would be really fantastic at right now in the private sector would be channeling her efforts into a cause...fundraising or becoming a spokesperson for special olympics...i really don't see how she can/will be taken seriously in politics ever again...

Considering that she's being attacked by other Republicans now, I don't think that she has much as a future either.

She is resigning probably for one of three reasons:

1.) She grew tired of all the spotlight. While I think she enjoyed the attention, I don't think she realized how much it can cost you and perhaps she's starting to realize what's most important to her. Most center, center-left, far left people will disagree with this one.

2.) A series of e-mails between her and a McCain campaign manager about her husband's involvement in the Alaska Independence Party was brought back to life...that Todd Palin supported (for at least 5 years of his life) the idea of Alaska seceding from the Union. Palin replied in the e-mails as if she thought that Todd's support was of Alaskans "voting" independent. Her campaign manager wanted her to bring a message that would appeal to a broad segment of America and not just conservative white women and middle age white men that think she's hot. She refused to do that based on the e-mails.

3.) The GOP got into her ear. Perhaps they figured that she like Dick Cheney and Rush Limbaugh is corrosive and that they needed to distance from her. There were complaints about ethics with her....they also probably told her about the millions that can be made giving speeches across the nation...remember that she is still quite popular with a sizeable segment of Americans. Ultimately I believe that she knows on some level that she was a lame-duck governor and that even if she won the nomination from the GOP in the spring of 2012...it would likely be nigh impossible to match wits with President Obama in a fall campaign where any dirty laundry she has would get aired more comprehensively than it has been.

I think she got herself a sweetheart deal from somewhere. One that will make her a multimillionaire. Whether it is in media, as a spokesperson, or even a stuff suit, it is going to make her wealthy. Watch n see.

No doubt about it. The republican party imploding has been the best fireworks display ever on the 4th of July.
