COLUMBUS, Ohio — A woman said she has filed a formal complaint with the Columbus Division of Police after videotaping a police officer playing ping pong at a late-night party, 10TV's Danielle Elias reported on Saturday. The woman, who asked not to be identified, said she has been awakened twice by parties in the Bethel Village condominium complex. Calls to police about the noise have been no help, she said.
"We actually got to the point where we were making a call to the police department and it was like a slap in the face," she said.
The woman said she was awakened Friday night by a party and looked outside to see a police officer playing ping pong at a table set up inside a garage. She said she grabbed a camera and started recording.
"A uniformed officer should be protecting the citizens of this city, not playing ping pong," she said.
Police radio records showed that no officers were called to the address on Friday night, but police confirmed that a disturbance complaint was made on Aug. 14 in which the homeowner was verbally reprimanded by the responding officers.
The woman said the reprimand was not effective.
"The noise never ceased, not one time," she said. "While he was there it was louder. Seventeen people were yelling and screaming and laughing."
As for the incident Friday night, a Columbus Division of Police spokesperson said the officer appeared to be on-duty. Police also said that once the officer is identified an administrative investigation will begin, Elias reported.
If the investigation finds that officer was inattentive to his duties, he will be disciplined, police said.
