Obsession for Barbie Dolls Over Plain Janes

My little sister had lots of dolls. She talked to them all the time. They never answered her back. Wouldn't want to live the rest of my life with one of them plastic things.

The male desire for extremely thin, "Barbie" women is almost always linked to attaining a desired social status (and thus, suffering from low self-esteem) in some men. Being with a thin, blonde, statue-esque woman is right up there with driving an expensive sports car. These men want to be the envy of all other men because they are insecure about who they are.

I know some of you will argue that some men are just not attracted to over-weight, plain-looking women. I agree, because I feel the same way in my attraction to men. BUT, there are many of these status seeking men who have no problem sleeping with the non-Barbie women on the DL. Just think about every celebrity affair you've ever seen. Weren't there some times when you saw pictures of the "other woman" and thought "What the hell was he thinking? His gf, so-and-so, is way hotter!"

The love of thin women isn't much different than the love of diamonds. The only reason our culture values such things is because we've been told to value them. I think most men...if you strip away the component of "what others think" and trying to show off.....I might be a runt...but I'll take this...

Perhaps the insecurity theory is true for some men, but I think you are not accounting for the fact that the average man has between 7,000 to 10,000 times higher testosterone levels than the average women, which means that they simply want, need, crave, sex on average A LOT more than the average woman. I once heard a comedian put it best, he asked all the women in the audience to close their eyes and think back to the moment in their lives when they were the most sexually aroused, just out of their minds with passion and pure carnal desire, capture that moment in your minds he said.. now understand, that's how the average man is when he is not even thinking about sex! So I would argue that a large percentage of the time, the affair with the plain jane is just about a "release" for the man, exihibit A...Monica Lewinsky.

LOL, no because Hillary, according to the impeachment trial transcripts, which were surprisingly detailed and graphic, was not "taking care" of Bill, and it had been a "very long time" since he had any physical attention from a woman. The guy was a ticking sexual time bomb, of course this is all according to Bill's testimony, and we all know how he likes to stretch the truth to put it mildly.

I couldn't agree more. I think a big part of why a lot of guys go for stick thin girls is because they're worried about showing their girl off to their friends. If they just stopped caring about what other people thought it would be so much better. I don't know if any of you have heard of postsecret (http://postsecret.blogspot.com/) but it's this site where people mail in their secrets anonymously on postcards and i remember one a while back that said, "I left you because i was afraid of what my friends would think." I don't know.. just seems really sad to me..

Well I would agree that giving in to societal pressures is sad on many levels, thats why I would argue that most folks on this site have a lot of courage to date IR, given the still smoldering, and sometimes blatent racism in this country. However, could it just be that a lot of guys simply prefer more slender women, rather than the BBW, zaftig, ruebenesque, ect. look? I know that is the case for many men I know. The longer I live the more it is evident that beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder and what is unattractive to one is beautiful to someone else. Now an interesting discussion can be had as to why some people prefer certain body types over another, what are some of the factors that can influence preference; media images, predjudice, health issues, ect.
