Oberlin, Ohio () -- A day after students at Oberlin College put down their books to focus on how to respond to a spate of hate messages targeting blacks, Jews and gays on campus, classes resumed Tuesday amid tension.

The messages included graffiti with swastikas, posters containing racial slurs and other derogatory statements targeting various student communities and fliers bearing racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic language.

A student's report on Monday that she had seen someone on campus dressed like a member of the Ku Klux Klan led the school to suspend classes for the day.

i remember experiencing a bit of indirect racism towards black while at penn state

after a soccer match, a black kid from another school almost got into a fight with one of our guys and this guy from Texas on our squad (surprise!) said the black kid was being a nigger

racism at other colleges just doesnt surprise me one bit

    yeah

i seen this husky ass white dude on youtube lifting weights with a Howard shirt on

    i was like

but i think diversity is a good thing

u cant have it one way without having the other

some white people generally do like blacks and want to be around us, because they feel guilty or just have general interests in diversity

on the other hand, it defeats the idea of HBCUs

lots of blacks attend them because they simply dont want to be exposed to racist bullshit, while earning a degree (which is hard enough on its own)

i agree with you to a point until the bold part......I think most whites go for the price....maybe others go just as to see what it is like to be in an inverse situation. most will find out that we have slightly different cultures but they are no smarter than blacks.

as far as HBCU uuuhhhmmm I can half way see what you are saying but the B. kids are gonna have to get out there in the white world and deal.

agree to disagree then because i think we both make some valid points

while at psu, ive had professors and classmates who clearly expressed their positions on race. my first english class discussed raee quite a bit (i was the only black kid in the class). i wrote this before, but one of our books was 'The Presence of Others' and it in, white guilt/race was covered. i guess ive been shaped and molded by the people i encountered, both in class and in literature.

i do agree tho, and it has been studied..that non-blacks do attend hbcus because of price, among other factors

even still..with price..u have to be open to diversity because no matter how cheap it is, ur going to be surrounded by blacks and be social to an extent

My brother went to Oberlin, and it's where he met his future wife (WW). He often tells me about his experiences @ Oberlin, and they were all pleasant ones!
