I agree with you. But it'll be an Edwards/Obama combo. Between those two guys, they hit all demos. Hill has too many negatives.

IMHO America is ready for a black or female president when its willing to vote one into office.

You make a good point there, no question. I'm just looking at the big picture. Can he go all the way?

Puzzled by what? jay just started a whole blackmalephobia thread. No one [in this forum anyway] is using the line as an excuse not to vote for the guy, which was the context it was used in the civil rights movement.

I believe enough of America is ready to elect a President based on the content of his or her character and not on the colour of his or her skin.

    It's 2008 people.

That doesn't mean Obama or Clinton are the right people for the job, it means that if their messages resonate with enough people, they can win. Certainly the odds of a white male winning the Democrat nomination is extremely low...

And if you can't beat a guy named Huckabee, you don't deserve to be President.

If you read my previous reply in its entirety, you would understand what I meant about being puzzled. When I say puzzled, what I mean is, if America isn't ready for a black president now (presently) then it will never be ready. What people have to understand is that, racism isn't going away, regardless if its the year 2008 or 4008, its here to stay. Its a social construct, it has always been here and will remain here until the end of time basically, so it makes no sense to say America isn't ready for a black president.

I read the blackmalephobia thread, its a sad and painful truth, however Barack doesn't represent the average regular black man, or the stereotypical black man. Technically he isn't even black, but of course under the social construct he is a black man. Barack Obama, like Oprah Tiger woods etc, transcend race. What happened for Barack in Iowa wouldn't happen for a Jessie Jackson or a John Edwards. The same as Oprah's level of success not happening for a Barbra Walters or a Montel Williams. Obama, Oprah and the like, are able to transcend race and even exceed or beat out their white counterparts.

I bet there was a time in American history when people said this country wasn't ready for a black general...or black chairman of the joint chiefs...or black secretary of state...

Give it time and we'll see more progress..

we came a long way from dumb negro slaves to leaders of entertainment, military, entreprenaurship, etc....

    everything just takes time..

just don't expect Minister Farakhan to become Governor of Minnesota anytime soon tho

    :p

I would like to see a black president, just to show how much this country has progressed..

    but..

like someone else probably stated before, Obama would need a miracle not to be assasinated by some backwoods militant type with a rebel flag, who can't fathom the idea of a country, with a white majority, being led by a black man.

I would settle for a black vice president also..

They would both be monumental leaps in american history for african-americans.

LMAO Settle for a black vice president, and who's to say there still wouldn't be threats on his life?LOL Many white presidents have had attempts made on their lives, so what, that comes with the territory of being the President, unfortunately. If he doesn't get the nomination, only then will I settle for second place, opps I mean vice president.

The only way Obama will be on the ticket is if either he or John Edwards win the nomination. If Hil wins, you know she ain't picking him.

I read your entire post, I just didn't see the need to quote the whole thing. A careful reading of my own post shows I clearly said 'mainstream' america, the same mainstream america that everyone bitches about being stared at by when they walk down the street with their b/f or g/f of another race, the same mainstream america hollywood is so afraid of offending by showing prominent IR love scenes, etc...

It would be nice if we could all just cose our eyes tight and say that Obama transcends race to the point where it won't be a factor. This isn't a vote for favorite pro athlete or talk show host, it's a for the presidency. My guess is the same people who cower in the corner of an elevator when a bm steps on or switches their purse to the other shoulder when passing a bm on the sidewalk will have second thoughts about voting for a bm for president. Sad, but still likely to be true.

Then again, he is having huge early success. I sure won't be upset to be proven wrong by the voters.

Hilary.....good candidate....too divisive......Republicans would be a lot more enthusiastic seeing her win the nomination than Obama. The Rep. are trying to fool people into thinking they'd would rather see Obama than Hilary.....they actually want Dems to vote for Hilary....it would give the GOP voter base a weak excuse to vote for Huckabee or Romney or whomever else.

White America ages 60+ aren't ready.....and most white baby boomers (mid 40's to 60 yrs/old) are probably on the fence. As long as he can get young people to vote.....he'll win......George Bush was the best thing to happen to Obama.....people are so dissastisfied with what's going on that they are more willing to try something that is different from what we've normally done.

Again, when I quoted graphicsRat, I stated that I am puzzled by this comment...... "I don't think America is ready for a Black president". That comment is assuming that some magical holy day, America will no longer be racist and perhaps later in the future, say ( I don't know maybe the year 50000008) will be ready for a black president. And my response to that was basically saying, you might as well say America will never be ready for a black president. Racism isn't a switch you can turn off with time, it doesn't just disapear into the night. It was here in the past, its here now and will continue to be here in the future, and that is a sad fact. The bottom line is, if the USA isn't ready now, it never will be.
