This possible firing of General McChrystal is getting high attention in this military town where I live. There appears to be much support here for the General. General McChrystal voted for Obama, but there is a feeling here that Obama is not up to the job as Commander In Chief as the the General has stated in a controversial article just put out today. I will let the political geeks dig this one out.

I would reassign the General. I read the article. He trash talked about so many of the people above him. Obama should also split up this team america. It is fine to have opinions but you are to keep them out of public so as to not cause trouble for the chain in command.http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37839756/ns/us_news-military//

I have a couple of thoughts on this whole thing...

Did you read the article? MSNBC posted it online earlier today and I got a chance to read it.

First of all, Rolling Stone, in and of itself, is not up to the same standard of journalism that a lot of other news establishments are....actually, I'd have to say, they adhere to a whole different set of rules and standards and still call themselves 'journalists', which is where my issue with this whole 'article' stems. The reporter for Rolling Stone knew they were going to create a shitstorm by some of the things they were recording- I have a hard time understanding why anything an aide says makes it into hard copy when they are profiling a four star general.

I taught Journalism for awhile, and if any of my former students showed up with an article like that, I would have told them to omit the fluffy stuff and give me the real facts. It's not a human interest story or a profile- it's a sample of yellow journalism designed to shock and awe the folks reading Rolling Stone, who's demographic is probably comprised largely of democrats and liberals- the sort of people who's feathers would certainly get ruffled reading some of the things that McChrystal and his aides said during those few days of observation and interviews.

I know RS is supposed to be this 'gritty' music themed magazine, so they publish all sorts of things, including profanity, to make them seem a whole lot grittier and in the know than a lot of other publications. I think they try to hard. The way that article came off made the general look like a frat brother playing around the house for the weekend with his friends. It was ridiculous. Not to say you have to make the man sound like he's constantly standing at attention in a corner with someone to dust him off from time to time, but really?

My other issue is with the general himself. What kind of person hires people that would call something 'gay' to a reporter that they KNEW was recording what they say. And how DARE he openly criticize the President and VP the way he did. That is so far from the realm of professional that I don't even know what to call it- not to mention that his entire job is to serve the Commander and Chief, aka Obama. I think he handled himself like an ass, hired a bunch of asses who didn't know how to behave themselves, and now he's realizing how much those frat boy antics are going to cost him. You wanna be a pompous frat boy know-it-all? Do it in the privacy of your own head and not in front of your aides or a freakin' reporter- dipshit. If you can't even keep those things quiet, what other things are you NOT keeping quiet? Should we make sure you're not talking to your aides about matters of national security, too?

I think the Obama issue is separate from the overall purpose of this thread- that Obama may fire this general. I'm not sure about firing him, but I'd say pulling him out of the field and throwing him behind a desk would be a damn good punishment for a man who seems to think that the world of war will not function without him.

    I guess we'll find out.

McChrystal should have kept his personal thoughts and beliefs to himself.

You never publicly criticize your bosses. That's a no-no.

  7. Every president from Lincoln to Obama had problems with generals throughtout history of this republic..

McChrystal had a loyal following, but at the end of the day, his position was just that...a position..that had other qualified people available to perform it. I think he got a little too big for his ACUs and forgot about that.

At that level, you just can't talk shit to a magazine, and think everything will be gravy back home. Hell even a major knows it's not smart to belittle your chain of command, lol.

Now that McChrystal's gone....Petraeus has taken over the helm..

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/world/us_and_canada/10401329.stm

But...there is always gonna be the lingering spectre of *his* having *passed out* some time back...

Maybe the strain of having to oversee all these events transpiring....it could take its toll on *anyone*..

Let's all hope that after his installation as supervising or whatever...he does NOT end up like The Much Regretted Harold Washington (Chicago)...and we know what happened to *him!*

    'Nuff Said!!!!

    Obama is a politician...he isn't anybody's boss.

All this type of bullshit is just a show designed to make mofos think they're in a democracy.

Geraldo Riveria went ballistic on Rolling Stone magazine for bringing down the General. We all know that Rolling Stones Magazine is anti-military. What we still do not understand is why the general granted them such access. He committed his own demise.

no excuse...the general has been in politics long enough to know that words are the 'bullets' of that profession..

    He just committed career suicide.

I'm sorry, but if you or your aides show such insubordination towards your boss, then your ass gotta go. He's the commander-in-chief, for Pete's sake. You can't follow the chain of command, move bitch, get out the way.

I dont Know if the General was canned or resigned. In any event, if he would have remained on his Afghan post, Obama would have look like a coward and Americans would lose respect for him
