Act is one of several attacks to have taken place at Shakur Center in Stone Mountain.
    (October 25, 2007)

A noose was discovered around the neck of a bronze statue of late rapper Tupac Shakur, which sits in the Peace Garden inside of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts in Stone Mountain, Georgia.

Vandals have also defaced the building and later further damaged the statue with "handbills of garbled rants that include references to 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina as well as vague threats against various record companies and rappers," read a statement from The Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation (TASF).

The attacks, which all took place between the early hours of Saturday, Oct. 20 and 2 a.m. Monday Oct. 22, are currently being investigated as hate crimes by the De Kalb County Sheriff's Office.

"We thank everyone for their prayers and support. Although our hearts are temporarily in pain, our spirits have already forgiven the perpetrators," said Tupac's mother and TASF founder, Afeni Shakur. "Hate comes in all colors and genders, therefore we will use this act of hate and ignorance to bring our community together and to pray for the healing of those who harbor such feelings. With God's guidance, the work of the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts and Peace Garden will continue to positively impact and transform our community."

The Foundation is currently raising money to construct a fence around the parameters of the Center to prevent these types of incidents from occurring again.

Meanwhile, the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts will kick off its 2nd Bi-Annual Film Screening with a re-dedication service of the Peace Garden on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. Following the service will be a film screening and panels from film industry experts. Both events are free to the public.

Seems like putting up a noose is now in vogue for the hate crime set. Since the Jena 6, there was a noose hung around the doorknob of a college prof. in NY, and some other recent incident too that I can't recall right now.

I realize it's nothing new to hanga noose, but it seems to have gained more 'popularity' recently. Or maybe the media is just picking up on it more since Jena?

I was thinking about it the other day about what a powerful symbol a noose is. There aren't many other symbols that invoke as much emotion and hurt - the swastika, hmm that's all I can think of.

You see it happening often because it is something you can get away with, that is the tactic now days of racists. If you can get away with it, then they are going to keep doing it until at least 2 of them get caught.

And that is why it is so popular, because nobody can find or attempting to find a way to catch 'em.

It's about time our legislators stiffened laws and penalties involving this type of hate crime. I understand it was voted down on previous attempts.

FOR RELEASE SUNDAY OCTOBER 14, 2007

Assemblyman Joseph R. Lentol Is Introducing Legislation that Makes
    Displaying a Hangman’s Noose a Hate Crime.

Assemblyman Joseph R. Lentol is introducing legislation that would make
displaying a hangman’s noose in public, aggravated harassment in the
first degree, which is a class E felony. This would only apply if the
noose was being displayed with the intent to harass or threaten someone
because of their race, color, ancestry or other similar motivations.
Aggravated harassment already includes public cross burning and swastikas
    .

“We have all seen the devastating effects that this despicable act has
had on the Columbia University community,” said Assemblyman Lentol. “I
think it is high time that the law recognizes the racial and historic
    hatred that a noose symbolizes.”

“Displaying a noose can have very real emotional effect on people. The
law should recognize that this is, without question, a hate crime and
protect people from it. It should also punish those who would choose to
display something so motivated by hatred.”

If passed, a person who is found guilty of displaying a noose, would now
be eligible for a maximum sentence of 1 and third to 4 years in prison.

“I feel very strongly that this is the right thing to do and I only wish
that we had done so before this awful act at Columbia University,” said
    Assemblyman Lentol

I never cared for Tupac, but I'm even upset over this. Whoever did this should be locked up. Sorry about the tardiness in reacting to this.

I hate to break it to yall, but a black man has been charged with hanging the noose around the Tupac statue.

Tuesday - November 6, 2007 by Brandi Hopper

An African-American man has been charged with the noose vandalism of a Tupac statue at the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts.

As SOHH previously reported, the center was vandalized early on the morning of October 20. Fliers bearing rants about various rappers, Hurricane Katrina and 9/11 were plastered to the Tupac statue and a noose was left hanging around its neck

43-year-old Dekalb resident, Kenneth Anthony Wilson, was charged with the felony, second degree criminal damage to property, on Thursday (Oct. 1), according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Wilson, who is of African-American descent, has not been charged with a hate crime because according to Dekalb Police spokesperson Mekka Parish, the investigators had no reason to believe the crime was motivated by race. Wilson is being held on $1,500 bond.

This shows how divided and messed up the overall African-American community has been when another brother has been charged with this disgusting crime. All this stuff regarding the Jena 6, Megan Williams, and the other hate crimes that have going during the past couple of months, people of color need to start to cooperate with each other while this crap continues to go on.

I was wondering why nobody in the hip-hop music industry and culture hasn't said nor done anything regarding this crime. I guess it has to do with dissing another person of color with has been trendy in that culture for the longest.
