    DI

I have never come across anyone in my five or six times in Russia that was looking to do me harm. A lot and I mean a lot of people stare and that takes some getting adjusted to when I visit other that everyone has been friendly.

Since I am light skinned the assumption is Muscovites, and folks from Saratov & Engels stare because I am obviously from the US.

that's what i'm saying! There are so many black people in Moscow, and many of them stay forever and have later their little afro-russian kids :D
but well yeah, people like to stare, which can be, i guess, kinda irritating....lol

DI,had you read years back of a Afro-Russian named Angela Ermekova? She had tennis star Boris Bekker's baby.

I've heard this name, but i dont really know who's that....:) but I know many other afro-russian people. there are many of them in Russia (especially after the Olympic games of 198...something, i dont remember lol)! The most famous afro-russian is Pushkin by the way.

The literary giant Alexander Pushkin who's great grandfather was Abram Petrovich Gannibal (Eithiopian), raised by Peter I the Great or Pyotr Alexeyevich Romanov. This is also the name of Vin Diesel's movie coming out in 2009 called Hannibal. Gannibal was brought to Paris when he was given the name Hannibal the Carthaginian.

I'm pleased DI that you are one of the few Russians who believes Pushskin has Black ancestry. Most Russians think he was a Arab or something other than Black.

really? I didnt even know that. lol I've always thought so, as well as my parents, teachers etc etc. I think it's obvious, if you take a look at him. he has those black features. :)

Haven't been there yet Malik because of money issues, but like i was telling DJ, i'm gonna try again this autumn. Hopefully me and D can do all the things you mentioned. We would be traveling from Moscow back to her hometown using the train, and i'm really excited to get a glimpse of all the scenery. It should be really awesome. By the way, is there any way to avoid the militia shaking me down or is that a given? lol.

Sure you can try and blend in.....NOT
The militia will shake down Russians, it does not matter. If they see you chances are they are going to ask you for your passport and your registration papers. They shook down my wife for some rubles in the Red Square because they stated her papers were incorrect, it amounted to a few USD's at the time like $4 or $5 bucks.

Other than that enjoy yourself like I stated all the Russians I encountered were very polite and many were inquisitive. Oh most def try the vodka there, it's cheap and POTENT.

Also keep in mind it's really a different place.

Example: Wifey and I accidentally walked into the parking lot of a police station and a guard wielding a machine gun asked us where we were going? Can you imagine that happening here? Actually being asked by an officer wielding a machine gun why you are entering a police station by accident? That would never happen here. My wife was surprised for the longest that she was never asked for papers when she came to the US.

I knew either the Po-Po or some officials would jack a brother in Russia.

I don't wanna plant any thoughts in anybody's head, nor do I know DI's living arrangement, but I suggest if money is tight, go in the off-season.

Winter time travel to Europe is the best kept secret in traveling abroad...

I seriously thought about going back to Kiev for $600 roundtrip from LAX taxes included!

    That's DIRT CHEAP!

Just dress WARM, Eastern Europe gets HELLA COLD and I do mean HELLA COLD.

They did that to me, I didn't get shook-down but they asked for my papers and what I was doing in Kiev and then kindly pointed me to the train station...

We don't ask for papers unless you have Brown skin and that's usually only if somebody is touting some new push for immigration reform -

Is there a travel advisory on that sort of harassment?
