Seven high school wrestlers from New Jersey were scratched from the state’s upcoming District 1 tournament after a controversial photo of what appears to be the same team members surfaced online earlier this week.

The photo shows seven white Phillipsburg wrestlers posing around a black dummy wearing a Paulsboro High School wrestling shirt, hanging from a noose. Two students in the photo appear to be wearing pointed hoods.

Phillipsburg and Paulsboro are longtime athletic rivals, especially when it comes to wrestling.

Phillipsburg principal Gregory A. Troxell has yet to comment on the situation.

“It’s a private student matter,” Troxell said, according to NJ.com. “[And] no other Phillipsburg High official can comment on it.”

New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) Assistant Director Larry White said the photo was sent to the state Division on Civil Rights on Tuesday under an anti-bullying policy, reports the Associated Press.

“The Division on Civil Rights is monitoring the respective responses of the school and the NJSIAA,” said spokesman for the Attorney General’s office said in a press release, according to The Star-Ledger. “The Division will review whether further investigation and action is appropriate.”

It used to be that schools would steal the rival mascot...SMH

I'm glad they were scratched from the tournament but I hope further disciplinary action takes place. It looks like they're in a school gym...additional investigation is warranted and I hope those kids are slapped with a harsher punishment than just the loss of participation in a tournament.

Bunch of bloody idiots. Ignorant fools of history. Additionally, I hope there isn't a Black wrestler on the rival team.

Thanks for the link. Terrible. How could he not personalize it. Hope he creams the team in the competitions.

...On an unrelated note, I heard of this disgrace yesterday...

    IMO

Call me crazy and maybe I'm the only one who thinks this way but if I were a black student on the opposing team, my first reaction would be that they remain on the team and able to participate in the tournament. Why?..because I get to get my hands on them. Their goal was to intimidate and break spirits with that picture. Unfortunately for them, they would have to look into the eyes of a deeply angered but prepared opponent on wrestling night. Don't they know most racist do their dirt anonymously so they won't have to face the one they offended?...fuckin idiots.

My response on the news would go like this, "What, they'll be suspended?...NO hell no. Let them face me on wrestling night. Let them all face me one by one...hell they can even bring the noose if they think it would help."

I guess I'm just crazy like that.

On the other side, If you were to lose the match you'd give them a huge ego boost.

I can absolutely appreciate wanting to let these guys go toe to toe with the very people they were trying to intimidate. With that said though, allowing those punks the right to compete sends the message that what they did wasn't really that big of a deal. Not to mention the fact that next time they do something similar (and trust me, there will be a next time) the victim may not be equally matched physically. I think letting them wrestle would've done more harm than good...but I can definitely understand the desire to get your hands on them!

    LOL @ "post-racial" America.

Kids born in the 90s and 00s think that it's perfectly acceptable to put this kind of shit out in public.

BTW I can't wait to see the usual suspects on this forum stick up for these idiots.

It's Mississippi. Need I say more?

Well actually, I'll add this. James Meredith, the person whom the statue is modeled after, would not give two shits about it, knowing him after all....
