Missouri defensive linemen Michael Sam announces he is gay ahead of the draft. He could be the first openly gay football player in the NFL. This will of course cause a media circus. Hopefully the media will talk themselves to death about it during the off season. So when the regular season starts the attention isn't a distraction for his future team. http://msn.foxsports.com/college-football/story/missouri-de-and-nfl-hopeful-i-am-an-openly-proud-gay-man-020914
He's incredibly brave to do this before the draft. I get what he's saying though about enough people already knowing and really not wanting to be outed by someone else. "I want to own my truth. ... No one else should tell my story but me." Kudos to him. I pray this has no bearing on his NFL career. Lets see the NFL stand behind their words, welcoming and supporting him in the 2014 season.
Man I don't know if the nfl is ready for this. And I think it will make his draft stock drop drastically
An NFL player had already came out a few years ago. I guess he is still playing football. I don't think that this news will hurt the NFL, or the prospect for that matter. I am sure he is aware of what he's signing up for. I am sure he is also aware of the other moniker the NFL has been given; NFL= Not For Long. I think when he is selected to play for an NFL team, and when he shows what he can do, his sexuality will mean nothing. Bravo to him for being straightforward.
I don't see this as "brave". What is brave about announcing to the world "I fuck my own sex" Who cares to know this. Certainly not your co-workers, whom you undress with and shower with and get as intimate in the course of your job as one can. This isn't a desk job you are announcing, this is a sports fox-hole. There is a reason men and women don't share dressing rooms on the job, in the gym, etc, because evolution has wired us that when we see what sexually attracts us naked or are intimately touched by them, we may respond. He is setting himself up when all that mattered is, can he play football?. STHU about who you fuck off the field. Don't make it any one else's business. Someone needs attention.
This, gay people im happy for you but stop being fucking attention whores screaming your preference out to the world at the top of your lungs.
Are you kidding me?? That's as bad as don't ask don't tell. Just because he's attracted to men doesn't mean he's going to be sexually aroused when touched by his teammates. Any mature person can exercise self control. I see patients naked all the time, am I ever sexually aroused? Fuck no. That's work. Can't believe people have a hard time recognizing the difference between work and play. Do you care that your ob/gyn is heterosexual and performing extremely intimate exams on you? Doubtful. He's there to do a job. Period. Everyone's looking to make a buck these days. I think he took a preemptive strike to ensure he's not blindsided by these headlines later.
I get that but I think most people are wired similarly (more people than not can perform their job without getting wet at the touch of an attractive co-worker). He's gay either way, whether it was announced or not, so what's the point in hiding who he is? To make his teammates comfortable? Why should he have to pretend to be something he's not just to pacify others? Just doesn't make sense to me. I think him coming out was actually his way of trying to protect his future. He put all his cards on the table, now it's time for people to grow the fuck up and respect the fact that his sexual orientation doesn't affect his performance on the field (he's been gay this whole time and there are no complaints from teammates so far).
I can't speak for women but every straight blooded man at every job I've held in life got aroused when attractive women are around. Had a few gay dudes who I could tell really by their tone who were turned on by me too. I never asked my ex gf nurse does she get aroused with patients but I do remember her saying nurses at her job loved looking at well endowed patients all the time. lol @ people grow the fuck up. Grown people don't have to announce to the world what their preference is.
Cute patients are always nice to deal with, but they're not sexually stimulating me in the least lol. His teammates worrying about him being gay (and coming on to them...or whatever the concern is) is like me worrying that every heterosexual man will hit on me just because I'm a woman. It just doesn't work that way. Just because he's gay doesn't mean he wants to jump his teammates. I just don't think anyone should have to hide who they are to appease others. We should be grown enough to understand that just because man is gay doesn't mean he wants to fuck every man he sees. And again, I think he announced it because he had to. People already knew. First openly gay NFL player...someone would eventually out him. Anything to make a buck. Why not let him set the record straight from jump.
I don't go around telling women I love white women, does that mean I'm hiding it? I don't think any player is worried about being butt fucked, it just clashes with their views and beliefs in life if they do have a problem with it.
DADT was a law, so moot comparison. Why can't you call this for what it is, a man seeking attention by announcing to everyone, who he sleeps with. So I ask you now, how is a headline made by him any different than a headline made by someone else? It's still 'outing him'. He could have you know, said NOTHING about who he likes to sleep with. Let people continue to speculate - if it worked perfectly fine for him and didn't interfere with him as a player in the past, why is he trying to 'fix' that? It's also funny how you expect others to 'differentiate between work and play', when the very man you're applauding can't seem to do the same, per his announcement. As for your ob/gyn example, they also don't announce their sexuality at the door, for what reason would they? Also, as a patient I'm not exploring my ob/gyn's dick in return. Football is a two way job, every one is in the trenches and in the showers. And if you think no doctor or nurse has ever been sexually attracted to a patient or co-worker, you're sorely mistaken. I don't know where you have been, but there are a hell of a lot of nurses who mess with their doctors, and doctors and nurses DO start relationships with their patients...I don't however think they call the media to 'bravely' announce in the course of their job that they have sex with other women or men. Like I said, who cares, show us your stats, thank you.
I understand homosexuality clashes with some peoples beliefs, but at the end of the day it's not their place to judge another. Michael Sam coming out simply means he's not hiding from anything. He doesn't have to worry about being seen in public with a boyfriend, he doesn't have to worry about someone outing him, he doesn't have to worry about trying to be something he's not for the sake of close-minded people. In a perfect world, people wouldn't have to announce their sexual preference, but unfortunately in todays world there's always a story to be made when it involves the famous (or in this case, future famous). Mr. Sam simply nipped the speculation in the bud.
You completely missed the point. Bottom line, the majority of people (note I didn't say all) can do their JOB without making it a sexual act. Gay, straight, anywhere in between...has no bearing on someone's ability to be professional. You can call what he did attention seeking, I call it squashing rumors before they start. Either way, he's been gay this whole time, his teammates all knew, and they were able to handle things as adults. Lets see if the NFL can manage this topic as maturely as the collegiate level seems to have done.
You are the one who has completely missed the point. What I AM saying is, why can't he JUST DO HIS JOB, WITHOUT MAKING IT A SEXUAL ACT? He is the one who made the connection between him as a potential professional player and him privately as a homosexual. Do you get that?
What speculation?...no one was paying him any mind, everyone basically knew right, so it makes you wonder...Legit 'fear', or PUBLICITY stunt? Attention seeking much? Look no further than the NYDN Sports headline whom he interviewed with... "Missouri football player Michael Sam says he is gay, aims to be first publicly gay player in NFL" Notice not, "Potential Mid-round Draft pick AIMS to be the Best Defensive Lineman in the NFL"? Now, the NFL would never ask his orientation by hiring rule, so why the 'gay aim' exactly? You also say he now doesn't have to worry about being seen with his boyfriend on dates, AS IF he will suddenly flaunt it. I don't think he did this to be able to freely date men in public- there ARE gay NFL players already, you know, whose boyfriends travel with them under the auspice of 'personal assistant', and who don't feel the need to flaunt it just like players don't flaunt their mistresses. They remain discreet about it. Iit isn't about appeasing close-minded people, it's about being a green-horn and letting your field skills and not your bedroom skills do your talking for you, and it's about respecting the vacuum that is the NFL locker-room to keep the unwanted attention and drama AWAY from it, lest you be considered a selfish attention-seeking ho.
In a sport that's deemed "masculine" and "manly" in a field of guys touching each other's balls, copping a feel in spandex, and yet they all identity as heterosexual...I'd say this is a brave move, especially since such communities can be a bit too hostile regarding the LGBT community. Certain misconceptions or preconceived notions are being broken down and that just because you're a gay football player, doesn't mean you lack the qualities of being able to show the world. That, and hopefully this won't kill his career. He'll have to be ten times the player in the field compared to the rest in order to make his point all the more known. So, good job, bro. So sad that some people lack empathy towards something they cannot comprehend. Purposely or not, it all stems from politically correct idea of hiding things.
if he is going to be that good denver better draft him quick...i could care less if he is gay or not...can he block and protect the QB...if his current team all knew he was gay then it would be just a matter of time before his new NFL team would also know he is gay...i don't think teams want to have to deal with this kind of nonsense in the media...they want performance on the field and men that can handle their business off the field and stay out of trouble... quite frankly i am getting tired of all the coming out parties:|
