This dosent surprise me at all, many blacks seem to be socially conservative. I think there would be alot of blacks in the GOP,if it wernt for the misconception that Republicans are racist and etc(ok ok ,maybe its not too far from being a misconception) Also, democrats tend to be more favorable of civil rights issues and do a better job at tackling issues of Blacks in general.
I'm not surprised by that either. Many blacks (including some in my own family) are socially conservative and economically liberal I'm convinced that a populist, consevative candidate (maybe like a Mike Huckabee-type) would get a good deal of black votes
That recent gay marriage deal in Cali last month made me thought about hearing about the majority of blacks living over here overwhelming voted yes for prop 8 (for banning gay marriage). Personally speaking, I'm against gays marrying but not for the same reasons as many black people do, which is mainly religious and civil rights reasons. Even though I'm mainly liberal on most issues, I am conservative when it comes to of course gay marriage and on how the military is treated. So, especially with that gay marriage battle, I can see more clearly to why blacks have some of the same views as conservatives do.
If by 'misconception', you mean generation long campaign to smear blacks for political gain on the part of Republicans via the Southern strategy I'm with you. This study isn't surprising at all. Black Americans tend to be very socially conservative. That's why the fact that Republicans can never attract more than 10% of the black vote in any given election serves to highlight the GOP's negative attitude and actions toward the black community at large.
Since when do blacks care about marriage anyway? You can't get many of these brothers to even acknowledge their children, let alone marry the woman they have them with. I'm not saying that child-rearing presupposes that a couple should be married, but do feel that there should be equal share of responsibility divided between them. How about that for a family value?
Ironically, most blacks live in the south (more specifically along the bible belt), which is where most of the Republican party's votes come from. It just goes to show that not all people vote with their pen in one hand and their bible in the other.
