after watching this.. man lol.. notice how the interviewer avoided actually saying the N word... she thinks quickly on her feet
afterall all the media controversy over anchors and whatever, involving racism towards blacks... ...she did good for herself.. some people actually do learn from other people's mistakes..
I don't want to get started on this so early in the morning. I saw that interview, and was ready to fight him. He is simply doing this to prop up his N----- Cd scheduled to be released next month. After the interview, I swore I saw the anchor, who was black, getting ready to cry, and it wouldn't surprise me if he actually did, since it was at the end of the newscast. I wish I can find a petition somewhere online to stop this, otherwise I dread what will happen if this CD is huge.
I saw on your mypsace that your mood is infuriated. I don't blame you. We go through life trying to light candles instead of cursing the darkness. But sometimes the darkness can get you so freakin' pissed off!
That guy's an idiot, and his only plan is to sell his CD and to get some free publicity. I really hope people see through his bs, and don't buy his album.
wonder what would happen to a white person, with that kinda shirt, trying to sell something... now anyways...back in the real old days, they'd probably get a slap on the back, and a high five.. anyway, hind sight is always 20/20, so people may be prohibited from wearing such shirts in the future, regardless of race.. while i'm pretty numb from being called the N word, LOTS of times in my life, there are people who still get offended..downright saddened by it... and that's not right on NAS's part
I'll be honest, the t-shirt is way over the top. He's stepping on a lot of toes with this publicity stunt. Although I know many people have their opinions about the guy, I'm going to buy his album. I've bought all his previous albums and have always appreciated his take on the industry. I'm sort of lost with this new idea of 'nigger' so I'll have to hear the album to completely understand the reasoning.
If a white artist comes out with an album called 'Cracker' .. Wait a second, there is a white artist named Uncle Kraker. Too late. His debut album was called 'Double Wide'. Early Life and Career He[Kracker] met Kid Rock in 1987, and Rock asked Kracker to become his DJ. Kracker did not know how to work the turntables, but he soon learned how, and he became a long-term friend and colleague of Kid Rock. Double Wide, Kracker's debut album, was recorded in the back of a tour bus during Kid Rock's various tours in 1999 and 2000.
O.K...grrr..settle down girl.. I don't know what a "Kracker" is, but that Michigan born so-and-so, ain't no cracker. This is a cracker http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_cracker and this http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~fcc/main/what's_a_cracker.htm When I was a young lass, I noticed that the Georgia girls were called "peaches". I asked my mom what was I called? She said, "You are a cracker. A Florida cracker." This is not a derogatory word. In these parts, it pretty much means "cowboy". So now a bunch of people who don't know any better decide it's a derogatory word and the world listens to the ignorance instead of the truth. Recently, they had to change the name of the annual Cracker Parade to Native or some such nonsense because so many DamnYankees moving here with their negative connotations making us change our language. Here's a bit of learning for y'all smart-ass northerners, crackers are black folks too! This next bit is in cracker language, so it'll be new to most of y'all: When the marshtackie wagons come down the piece; drivers tote'n their drags; aimin' to show off their catchdogs. They have to remember to not "crack" them, just "native" them (whatever the hell that means). BTW, I will not be calling myself a "native" (even to make Yankees comfortable). Natives are the Seminoles and Creeks, only they deserve the respect of that word, in my language anyways. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seminole http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creek_people
Well, I'm from the South. Southern California, that is. Niggers can be white people whether they like it or not. The same way you say crackers can be black people. Now I would never consider a white person a nigger, but I've heard the term used towards whites soo.. Anyways, calling black people crackers and white people niggers is ridiculous no matter how you chalk it up. Point is, Nas, a BM makes an album called 'Nigger'. Uncle Kracker, a WM, clearly calls himself 'Kracker'. Nuff said.
O.K. my first post was a bit intentionally over-the-top in order to make a point. I was injecting a bit of colloquialism and humor when I said "smart-ass northerners". However, your reply is just willful ignorance. I've already shown why, but it looks like you just took a line of my post out of context and didn't follow any of the links. Despite my attempt to explain the true meaning of the word, you have chosen to maintain your prejudices and tell "me" how it should be used. It's not about what people are "calling" other people. It's about what the word actually means, and how people have misappropriated the word for their own unwholesome reasons. Since you didn't actually read what I provided, here's a quick rundown. As far as race in Florida, the 'natives' in the 1800's were a mix of poor Scots, leftover Spaniards from the 1500's - 1700's, Creeks and Seminoles, and free blacks that escaped from former British states of Georgia and Carolinas. This mix of poor, hard-working folks (they built this state without A/C or mosquito repellent) referred to themselves as crackers. The term cracker referred to the cracking of the drag (whip) to drive cattle through the thick underbrush, a primary method of livelihood for these settlers. Once people outside of the culture learned of the term "cracker", the meaning was connotatively changed, but not legitimately, to mean "white" or "southern white" or "white trash". Today a forth or fifth generation Florida black family will proudly declare themselves crackers. Are you going to tell "them" that they are "ridiculous"? I think their families earned the right to call themselves whatever they please. Don't you? BTW, there used to be a Negro League baseball team called the Atlanta Black Crackers. Class dismissed for today.
Effie, the swastika use to have a different meaning also. But it has been dirtied. Same with cracker. You can point out its true meaning, but it doesnt change what it stands for today. But having said that, it isnt comparable to the other word. There is too great a power difference between the two. And in reference to the original post, what we are seeing is the dying gasps of this gendre. Hip Hop is played out and isnt selling like it use too. Artists keep getting more and more extreme trying to push up their sales. Only problem is it is having the opposite affect and it is pushing people away. I witnessed it happen with Disco, and it happened with the Blues and Jazz before that. The good news is something new is coming up and I cant wait.
My explanation of the "true meaning" is only to point out the extreme difference in the way the word is currently being used (by non-crackers )compared to the cultural reason for it's existence. I suppose that is the part that started my whole irritation regarding SoCal's post. Comparing the two words as if they are equally weighted in meaning and context. They aren't. Neither is it kosher (lol) (in my opinion) to compare this to the swastika symbolism. In fact, that was somewhat hurtful. To me it's more accurately akin to how the Native Americans used to have to call themselves "Indians" 'cause the ignorant newcomers thought they were in India and the name stuck. They took their heritage back. I think it's not o.k. to tell someone that they must disavow their heritage because others have hijacked the meaning of their "self-chosen" descriptive word. As I've said, the folks who call themselves crackers are of mixed ethnic heritage and their historic and cultural commonality is understood within the community. So... No, I won't acquiesce to the forced "dirtying" of the word by outsiders any more than I'll stop cooking conch fritters and key lime pie. Sigh...I just wish they had stolen the word "Conch" (which is another group of islanders and Floridians) and left cracker alone.
I had a teacher tell me that "rock," in general, would outlast rap/hip-hop.. personally, I listen to all types of music.. but I found it odd, that you and her would make the same statement.. a lot of times i can't understand what rock artists are saying (heavy metal, especially), but I dig the instruments and the way they "make" a song
