The fact that people are stuck with these two dog and pony shows who are both beholden to corporate interests at every turn, is beyond the pale. I'm apathetic about politics in general and take it with a grain of salt. As long as its controlled by money its like arguing who is the tallest in a midget contest.

Damn, TDK. You're not only drinking the koolaid you're bathing in it.

The Democratic Party isn't any better than the Republican Party. And if you want proof of that just look at the financial straits Illinois and Chicago are in and the Democrats have had a stranglehold on this state and city for years.

News flash: they aren't any better. They just have a better PR campaign at the moment.

If the measurement of better is what is actually done for the people of this country yes they are better. Never said they were good just that are absolutely better than the Republicans. Show something that refutes that. Show me Republican legislation for the people like affordable healthcare. All the Republicans do is top down economic legislation that only benefits those who don't need help. All they do is cut they add absolutely nothing, I would love to be wrong on this one but I don't see it. At least the Democrats produce members who've taken a real stab at things like poverty and the minimum wage.
The Republican rhetoric is fuck the little guy who cares if he dies, even if the Dems are trading housing and food for votes at least people don't have die in the streets hungry.

Illinois Governor Quinn who is a Democrat has cut education and raised taxes. People and corporations are leaving in droves. So....how do you explain that one?

Stop drinking the koolaid. Neither party gives a fuck about the average citizen. Neither one.

Then explain people like Elizabeth Warren and John Edwards

If neither one cared about the average citizen why even fight for things like higher minimum wage?
And if we're all screwed why even talk about it? Why even debate it in the slightest? Just enjoy time with your loved ones and wait for the end.

Are you familiar with price theory? Or the multiplier effect? Studies have shown in areas where the wages go up people spend more causing more economic activity. If what you're saying is true Australia would have the worst economy on earth paying fast food workers 16 bucks an hour fam. Don't buy the bs at face value, you have to critically think. We need men and women like you to critically think.

How many times do I have to tell you I am not a Democrat. I don't acknowledge any political party. I am a PROGRESSIVE, I am for the progression of all human beings not just a niche few.
Why are you so dismissive? Does it make it easier to look at life in black and white? One of these days you I should Skype with some coffee and chess and have a chat.

Or I could have just read your previous posts.

    Carry on, Sherlock.

But what are the prices for goods and services in Australia?

Are they higher than the US? Comparable? That's the question. $16 an hour is great, but if a fast food meal costs twice as much there as it does here, then it's not so great.

Yeah but look at the percentages. Currently the avg minimum wage is more than twice ours so unless the difference in price is over 100 percent they are still way ahead.
So it may cost more but what you're getting paid out paces the cost difference. Follow me?

Add to that the fact that Australia may have a minimum wage of $16 ~, but very few people over the age of 15/16 are earning it - wages rise with age, most adults in low paying jobs make around $20 an hour.

TDK is right, cost of living is higher, but it's not proportionately higher.

Definitely, cheap prices in the US are such a novelty :smt026

I should add, I don't think it's as simple as just raising minimum wage. There's surely a range of factors that make it work in Australia that would need to be addressed in America's system before it would be as effective.

Wages go up, prices go up - but things you buy in stores aren't the only cost of living. Minimum wage increases won't affect housing costs, schooling costs, health care costs, insurance costs... Pretty sure most working class families will be better off with a doubled income and a raised grocery bill. And what do you know, when people have more money to spend, they spend! Those business owners aren't doing too badly afterall.

There are solutions to working class poverty that don't lead to economic melt down. Like I said, it's not as simple as just raising minimum wage, but that's a factor. In these discussions a lot of time is spent imagining things that will go wrong rather than looking at examples that work. Australians have a pretty good standard of living, arguably better than the US, and our working class are supported.

I love seeing you agree with Whikle over something you'd call me racist liberal for.
My point from before was raising the minimum wahe seems to increase standards of living from the poorest amongst us. It's not a crime to want be paid fairly. When you ask how much profit is enough why not tell us what you think
