I won't link to it on this site, but if you want to read it, then the date of the entry is June 10. Von went on her anti-nerd tirade again. I don't care to post my response on her blog because I got banned from it and was accused of being someone else I was not. I know that I will not change any minds there any more than any of Von's writings will change my perspective on things. If you don't like nerds, then I won't fault anyone for that. As the saying goes, "you like who you like." But if you don't like nerds, then don't cry foul at any of those black nerds dating habits. Anyways, I don't find her argument credible at all. I find her definition of "nerd" to be inaccurate. In the latest entry, she got the definition from the dictionary. The definition given in the dictionary seems like it was written by someone who had a thing against nerds. It is just like looking up "black" in the dictionary (particularly pre-Civil Rights era). Her image of the nerd is "Steve Urkel". But I have not met anyone who is like Steve Urkel. Not of any race. Her anti-nerd argument is totally based upon the Straw man logical fallacy. First of all, she makes it clear that anyone who is not in the same league as Steve Urkel is not really a nerd. Then she goes on to slam black nerds for being unattractive. To me, Steve Urkel should not be a model for nerdiness because not only is he a fictional character, he is totally unrealistic. If you want to argue whether or not nerds are unattractive, then at least use a more realistic definition/image of the nerd. Start with people for whom "nerd" is part of their self identity (In this context, geek and nerd are interchangeable). People such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Linus Torvalds, Neil deGrasse Tyson, LeVar Burton, John Carmack, etc. These are the real geeks and nerds of the world mainly because all of these people self-identify as nerds (or geeks), and wear that badge with pride and honor. And none of those people are Steve Urkel, not even close. We all know why she is on a black nerds bashing rampage. She has been a strong basher of black men who are with non-black women. When she bashes the IR daters, the IR daters respond that the black women weren't interested in them anyway, so why the fuss now? So, she feels that the only way to justify black women rejecting these nerds is to draw a straw man using Steve Urkel as her inspiration, and then bash these people as being unattractive. Sure, it makes her gold in the eyes of fascist racialists, but it fails on some fronts. First, that begs the question "what did that white woman see in him that black women did not see?" If you are a high school black male who is nerdy, been rejected by the black women in your high school, but have been embraced with a white girl that went there, then your attempt to bash nerdy black men for being unattractive fails because some other people find them attractive. Second, her definition of "nerd" is totally out of sync with the definition used by self-described nerds. And that includes a lot of people who are generally charming and charismatic people such as Neil Tyson, Carl Sagan, and Richard Feynmann. Being a geek myself, I know for a fact that a lot of women find them attractive, especially in this day and age when being a nerd is actually kinda cool. But by bashing black nerds, the only thing she is doing is further alienating them from the "black community." And if that is her actual intent, then I would say that she is doing a good thing both for herself, and for black nerds. Black males who self-identify as nerds and geeks will surely be offended by her characterizations. Even if they disagree with her definitions, she is still mainly attacking them since they are the ones who complain about black women shitting on them. Besides, Steve Urkel doesn't exist. So if she is attacking black nerds who complain about being passed over, then she is really attacking anyone who self identifies as a nerd or geek, and that includes helluvalot of people who don't fit her narrow definition.
Wow so much typed. I would have loved to see the blog. Also, I thought levar burton was way to cool to be a nerd. What do I know? I am an engineer and love star trek lol. The funny thing is that steve chased after a black woman and levar married one(his star trek character was the only one that I can recall to date a black woman that was black on tng). It makes no sense about the ir thing. I agree though Steve is a poor example. Even Mr. white doesn't dress like steve.
...and WW love you too, so really who cares. Besides that just leaves more BM for those of us who don't feel the need to put people in categories and then penalize them for it.
