Josh Neer has been a professional MMA fighter since 2003, winning bouts in the UFC, among other outfits. He got the nickname “The Dentist” for reasons you can probably imagine.

In other words, the 5-11, 171-pound Neer doesn’t seem like someone you’d want to antagonize.

And he certainly doesn’t seem like someone you’d want to challenge to a fight, yet that was exactly what a man named Patrick Martin did, with predictable results.

That’s Neer, of course, delivering the punishment, in video that emerged Monday. (YT removed it)
As he explained it to the MMA blog Bloody Elbow, Martin went out of his way to receive the beating.

“Basically the guys a dumbass and been talking shit about MMA fighters for a month. On and on, I usually ignore him but this Saturday he wrote me on Facebook the message i gave. He had written 10 messages to me talking [expletive] which I ignored, but this time I said if you really want to fight come to the gym Monday at 5:30.

“I don’t know what his problem is but he’s a big guy, like 6-6 and 270 pounds and just acts like a bully. That what he seems like to me, just a bully.

“He showed up at 6:10, 40 mins into my practice. And then I asked him if he wanted to fight Rakim or me and Rakim is bigger then me so of course he chose me.”

The blog MMA Junkie was able to get in touch with the owner of the Iowa gym, RoundKick, where the incident took place. Pete Peterson, who is also the head instructor at the gym, corroborated Neer’s account and defended the fighter’s violent actions, adding that Martin had begun attending classes there with a goal of competing in a sanctioned MMA bout himself.

“It’s better to be in the gym in a safe environment where it can be stopped than out in the street somewhere,” Peterson told MMA Junkie. “I’ve been in martial arts for 25 years. Back in the old-school days, you hear about people walking into a martial arts school challenging the instructor and getting beat down. I’ve never, ever seen that happen in my life.

“I think this is the first time anybody’s actually challenged and been disrespectful to one of our coaches here, or even to myself or anybody. He just wouldn’t let it go. He has, my gosh, 70, 80 pounds on Josh, about nine inches on Josh – he’s a bigger guy. So I let it go.”

Although, in the video, Neer is shown repeatedly striking Martin after the latter appears to be defenseless — a situation that would have been stopped sooner in a real MMA fight — Peterson claimed that Martin was “not unconscious” and that it was unclear “why he wasn’t defending himself with the hands better.”

Following the incident, Martin took to Facebook
and claimed that the sequence shown in the video came after their three-minute round had ended, a round that he won. “Oh and I’m a man I won’t take the late hits to heart didn’t hurt at all!” he wrote.

Martin is demanding a rematch, while Neer is just hoping that his troll will just go away. However, according to TMZ Sports, the Iowa Athletic Commission is now investigating the incident.
