I'm sure many of you have had to deal with people assuming you hated your own race because you date IR. Where does this misconception come from? If strawberry is my favorite ice cream it doesn't mean I must automatically hate banana, lemon, walnut and all other flavors....
Norms and Stereotypes In all honesty, when someone says that another person hates their race, I'd say 8 times out of 10 they are the culprits of race hating themselves and are trying to brush it off of someone else so they can feel better about the way they feel. 1 of the other 2 out of ten care about the race and are worried about the race being sexed out of existence. I call them uninformed and borderline racial extremists. The final 1 out of 10 is just jealous or hateful. They can't find anything else to come at you about so they choose something that's handy. As far as where it comes from? Well, it all comes down to norms. It's viewed as normal for whites to marry whites and blacks to marry blacks.(I am not saying marrying or dating intraracially is abnormal by any means, I'm building up to a point here). So if you do anything outside of your race, it's abnormal. Some closed minded folks wonder where all of your racial pride is. These people who do this wondering normally have no racial pride themselves but for some reason that's neither here nor there. It all comes down to norms and stereotypes too. People say a rapper isn't real anymore because he doesn't live in the hood. I'm like wtf. The man wanted something better for himself so he isn't authentically black? Who really has the twisted image and self hatred issues in this context? Some people truly believe that black people aren't authentically black unless they're impoverished. I blame BET and the Poverty Pimps personally. Norms and stereotypes. Norms and stereotypes. Be-you-tiful86, your dating a black man has put you out of the norm of society, so people automatically assume that you hate all things white and therefore hate yourself and your race. People get a pre-image(I know this isn't a word; work with me here) in there head about how things are and if anything different comes along, then it obviously has a few screws loose and has a bad engine. That's why I love these forums. I swear I don't think I've ever seen such a group of open-minded people. It's amazing. My heart goes out to the webmaster(s?) for coming up with it and of course for the members here who in the end make the place what it is.
Re: Norms and Stereotypes Oh I dont mind the word u made up. I understand u clearly. I had a similar idea but wasn't sure whether I should describe it.Still struggling with finding the right words in English since it's not my native language. And i also agree on what u say about this board.Love it here.
I think that it only comes down to jealousy that's all. We live in a world of the have's Vs. the have-not's, so from my experience I would say that brothas would be mad at me because I pulled a nice-looking white girl and they couldn't.
