Legend of Manti Te'o's girlfriend: a tall tale everyone wanted to believe
in summation the story is this:

"Manti, describe your girlfriend to me."

I knew nothing about Lennay Kekua. Was she pretty? Smart? Funny? Blonde? Brunette? Did she like football? The only thing I thought I knew was that she had died, and that Manti Te'o, the best linebacker in college football and her boyfriend, had dominated a football game for Notre Dame a couple days later.

What I didn't know, and what Te'o apparently didn't know, either, is that Lennay Kekua wasn't pretty or smart or funny or blonde or brunette or a football fan or a far-too-young leukemia victim. She didn't exist.

That much came to light Wednesday courtesy of a Deadspin.com report. Te'o claims he became aware in December, and then says he realized he was the subject of a hoax after Notre Dame hired private investigators and computer forensic experts to figure out exactly who, or whom, Lennay Kekua was and why she pretended to die – and later come back to life.

The narrative whipsaw of a sad story turning into something far worse – a morbid, twisted tale of an Internet prank gone excessive – ignited the sports world Wednesday, and left everyone wondering whether this was really the case of a naïve football player done wrong by friends or a fabrication that has yet to play to its conclusion.

This is stupid communicating without meeting a human being in person. It is like having a person pretending to be a imaginary friend.

CNN knew about this story for a while but didn't want to out with it before the game. Funny how it broke right after the game.....wait, who sponsored the game? Lol
I was listening to talk radio lat night and heard a few interviews T'eo made. Something is not adding up. Like did his 'gf' call him to led her support of his grandmothers death 6 h before her 'death'. Also, dating for 3 years and never met? She had a car accident and leukemia and you didn't go to her side? Hmmmmmmmmm...... Well, I know what I think about that.

Manti Te'o has some serious self-esteem/insecurity issues, and FG's right!!! THREE years without seeing my better 1/2? I couldn't imagine! This entire sounded fake from the very beginning!

The lesson in this strange narrative is that if actual face to face communication has not been established after three years of internet chatting, there is something very wrong with this scenario. I could see many jokes about this. The steriotypical "dumb" athlete. If I were Manti Te' O, I'd want to know that person's identity as soon as possible.

Do you think maybe he might be gay?

He's gone 3 years being faithful to a "pretend" girlfriend... Why? What's he hiding?

Even if he was genuinely duped, he ignored all the action a "big man on campus" might get and preferred a sexless 3-year "relationship" with a stranger... Veeery romantic and not at all concerned with sex -- at his age?? With all that testosterone pulsing through his system? What's going on Te'o?

My thought exactly. Something just doesn't add up. He's either incredibly naive or hiding something. Whatever the reason, it's unfortunate because this will most likely affect his position in the draft (IMO). The Raiders would probably still draft him lol!

I hope it doesn't affect the draft. Especially if he's just very naive and romantic. He'll have enough trouble with that in life in general. :smt081

Agreed. If he truly is a victim, I feel bad for him cause it'll be a long time before he lives this down. Rough way to start in the NFL!

i really don't think he realize the seriousness in this matter!! Whether he's a victim or not, this incident, alone, will significantly affect his NFL draft status.

we're talkin' about good intergrity here! Off the record, I do believe he was a victim in all this, but I blame him for letting this saga play out play out as long as it has.
