A Michigan man has been arrested for killinghis four children and leaving his wife seriously injured on Wednesday morning, police said.

Authorities say the suspect, who has not been identified, called police after the murders at about 1 a.m. At his home in Dearborn Heights, responding officers found four childrenbetween the ages of 4 and 19 dead.

Police said the murders were part of adomestic violence-related incident.

The suspect told officials he had harmed his family, and he was arrested without incident, according to the Detroit News.

Two of the man's children, a 4-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy, were asphyxiated with carbon monoxide, while the 17-year-old and 19-year-old, who were reportedly stepchildren, were shot and found bound in the basement, Lt. Michael Krause told the Detroit News.

The mother of the children and the suspect’s wife, Faith Green, was in stable condition at the hospital, police said. She was reportedly stabbed and shot.

"This is a very rare occurrence and it's just difficult to understand and the motivation," Dearborn Heights Mayor Daniel S. Paletko said. "I don't understand what happened in this house, but it's a super tragedy ... As a father ... I think we can all appreciate how important one's kids are.”

Police said they are still investigating the crimes.

Local 4 has learned there were glaring warning signs about the man living in the home. The 49-year-old man served time for killing a former wife who was six months pregnant.

According to records, the man was convicted of second-degree murder in the stabbing death of his then-pregnant wife in March 1992. After that murder, he called police to tell them when he had done and waited for them to arrive.

He served 16 years in prison, getting just one fighting ticket in 2002 when he fought another inmate over a television.

The man was denied parole four times for various reasons, but it was centered around his lack of remorse for the crime.

After taking some cognitive-based programs, he was given parole in 2008 and discharged in April 2010.

He then married a woman identified as Faith Green, who was found severely injured Wednesday. They were married in 2010, but the mother of four filed a report in 2013 that said, "He is trying to make me leave our home. We're filing for divorce. He's being belligerent, kicking things. He kicked the couch while the baby was sleeping on it. He's just kicking things, threatening me and saying if I don't leave, things are going to get ugly. He jumped at me like he was going to attack. This went on for four hours."

On the same day, Green requested a personal protection order, but it was denied because of insufficient allegations. Police said they had not been called to the home in the past three months and she had not filed a complaint in the past three months.

Green filed for divorce in January 2014, but since no action was taken after the filing, the case was dismissed.

Last month, Green filed for divorce again, saying there had been a breakdown in the marriage and that there was no reasonable likelihood that the marriage could be preserved.
