But what about people who were in their 20's and 30's like you are now? If they were in the gym, would you have been aware of that? I know when I was in high school, I didn't care much what people older than me were doing.

Speaking of high school, I was the only one out of my friends who felt no pressure to be thin because it was effortless for me then. But every single one of my closest friends ate like little birds to try to stay thin. Why? So they would be attractive to guys. FACT.

I'm not geriatric yet, son. I can't wait 'til you get to be my age and you find yourself shaking your head at "young cats" your age. Wish I could be around for that!!! :D

Yeah because I went to Gold's Gym(damn football player monopilized the hell out of the school weight room in college and hs) and I saw who was in there. Mostly 20 somethings and 30 somethings and the rare older gym goers. Now everyone is in there.
I'm more inclined to believe a lot of your friends wanted to be thin so other girls wouldn't make fun of them for being fat since that's where a lot of the need for looking good comes from in hs. Its not so much attraction as it is social survival imo opinion anyway.

You said, "You're from an era where fitness wasn't as a big as it is now." Huh? While Jack introduced it in the 30's-50's and credited with making Americans aware of health and ftiness, it REALLY caught on in the 80's. I was a young teen, but I recall it was THE huge booming life-style trend. Gym's were packed. Fashon reflected it. Songs were "dedicated" to it. (Hi Olivia Newton John, lol) Movies were made about it (Perfect with John Travolta).

If its all the rage now, why is so much of America not fit?

You have a point. There was some of that too. But the pressure to be thin was also there from guys - maybe not overtly, but let's face it, when you're young, who do the hot guys want? The thin, hot girls! This message hits home at a younger and younger age. You have little girls in grade school that are worried about being fat because fat girls aren't popular, fat girls get made fun of, and fat girls don't get boyfriends! And let's face it - as much as we girls want to be popular I would say that getting a boyfriend becomes more important at some point than getting the approval of other girls.

Now, yes, the same can be said for boys, but I'm not aware of young boys being concerned about their weight at that age (grade school/jr high) out of fear of not getting a girl but more because they don't want to be bullied by other boys. If I'm wrong, with some strong evidence, I will stand corrected. Not saying it doesn't happen, but I've never been aware of it.

I understand when young girls try to be thin to have a boyfriend but any woman over 25 who feels the need to be thin just to attract men and not because she wants to do it for herself is stupid. Now i dont buy menopause, hormonal imbalance or child birth being the reason for staying overweight because there are women in the same situation who are in shape. An in shape woman is not a deal breaker for me but i dont buy excuses for being overweight, you either allow yourself to gain weight or you dont.

Did you know that women who have a hysterectomy gain weight almost immediately? Why? Hormonal imbalance. Women, as they age, lose hormones faster than men do. Diet and exercise sometimes have no effect on weight, and hormonal imbalances can cause weight gain w/no change in diet or exercise. And it is a known fact that women can gain weight during or after menopause for the same reason. Google it. It's no secret. If the hormones are brought back into balance, the weight will come off.

I gained weight (not alot, but noticeable) both times I was on birth control pills when I was younger. Again, hormonal. The progesterone component likely put the weight on, according to the doctor.

TDK and Iggy, were both of you made fun of at a younger age because of your physique??
    Too fat?? Too skinny???

For some reason it sounds like you have a very skewed perspective of the male/female social dynamic.

I attend a private health club and the only time it's crowded is in the mornings before 9 AM and after 5 PM. The rest of the time especially on the weekends its crickets. And here's the thing, when there is a good crowd, it's 70-75% WOMEN. They are the majority of the cardio classes and the ones on the cardio equipment like the elliptical machines, etc.

Most young guys come in with their boyz, maybe bench a little, do some dumbbell curls, play a couple runs of b-ball and jet.

Half the U.S. population is overweight. More young people today including 20 somethings are fatter than they ever were before. We didn't have this obesity epidemic in the 1980s.

One of the funny things I've heard original hip hop heads from the 1980s remark about is how there are sooooo many chubby/fat MCs in the rap game nowadays. Like a lot.

With the growing popularity in video games the last two decades, there are IMO more fat young men than ever before.
But there's no point in arguing this.

You and Iggy will never agree that women face more pressure to stay fit and phine for most of their adult lives than a man does.

How many men have their wives divorce them because they got too fat??
This is a real fear for some women.

My last example before I bow out.

Alec Baldwin looked like this in the late 1980s-early 1992. [IMG]

This is what Alec Baldwin has looked like for the most part of the last decade.

He's a bigger star now than when he was lean and fit and a 'sex symbol'.

    Kirstie Alley in the 1980s.

She recently lost a huge amount of weight, but her H'wood career is over. It started to end as she got heavier.

John Travolta is another actor who became literally a bigger star the fatter he got, even though he used to look like this,[IMG]

    Instead of this.

A fat man has a much easier path in life than his female counterpart.

Ummm I was on full scholarship for basketball in college so dont even go there fool. You aint got shit in regards to your claims that women have it worse. Men have it just as bad as women...if not worse considering we actually have to worry about how much we have in our bank account.

Agree to your assertions but the last statement is not true in porn because there are more fat women in the adult industry than fat men. I know its a lousy example but its still fact.

    Porn for the win!!

Fat chicks do get a lot of play in porno flicks. Fat dudes, not so much.

A fat chick can still be sexy IMO. A fat dude doesn't have the same aesthetics as a chunky woman.:smt030
