After sparking a firestorm of criticism from Nevada's elected officials for suggesting that people saving money for college shouldn't blow it in Las Vegas, Obama told U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in a letter that he wasn't saying anything negative about Las Vegas. It was the second time since taking office that Obama singled out Las Vegas as a potential example of spending excessively. "I was making the simple point that families use vacation dollars, not college tuition money, to have fun," Obama said, according to the letter released by Reid's office. "There is no place better to have fun than Vegas, one of our country's great destinations." Obama said he always enjoys his visits to Las Vegas "When times are tough, you tighten your belts," Obama said, according to a White House transcript of his appearance Tuesday at a high school in Nashua, N.H. "You don't go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage," Obama said. "You don't blow a bunch of cash on Vegas when you're trying to save for college. You prioritize. You make tough choices." The comments quickly sparked a flurry of reaction in the Silver State, which supported Obama in the 2008 election. Nevada had an unemployment rate of 13 percent in December. Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman said during a hastily called news conference that Obama is no friend to Las Vegas and would not be welcomed here if he visits. "I'll do everything I can to give him the boot," Goodman said. "This president is a real slow learner." Goodman and others are worried that Obama's words will discourage visitors from coming to Las Vegas and depress the industry further. "Enough is enough!" Democratic Congresswoman Shelley Berkley said in a statement. "President Obama needs to stop picking on Las Vegas and he needs to let Americans decide for themselves how and where to spend their hard-earned vacation dollars." Reid, one of Obama's closest allies, issued a statement headlined "Reid to Obama: 'Lay off Las Vegas'" and was unusually blunt in his reaction. "The President needs to lay off Las Vegas and stop making it the poster child for where people shouldn't be spending their money," Reid said. "I would much rather tourists and business travelers spend their money in Las Vegas than spend it overseas." Sen. John Ensign, a Republican, complained that Obama "failed to grasp the weight that his words carry." "Once again he has threatened the struggling economy of Las Vegas," Ensign said, recalling what he characterized as Obama's "irresponsible" comment in February 2009. Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons and Rep. Dean Heller, both Republicans, and Democratic Rep. Dina Titus also disparaged the president's remarks, while Republican candidates hoping to unseat Reid this year called for an apology.
Vegas was one of the hardest-hit places by the subprime crisis. Obama can't damage the place any further.
Seriously? Goodman needs to pull his head out. According to the transcript the President said: "You don't go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage. You don't blow a bunch of cash on Vegas when you're trying to save for college. You prioritize. You make tough choices." It was an example, and I see nothing wrong with it. Vegas is historically one of the cheapest places to fly to in the US, and one of the top vacation spots, though personally I think it's the armpit of Hell, it's never short on visitors anytime I've been there. So using it in the above analogy is perfectly acceptable. You don't see the CEO of Bass Pro Shops freaking out and bitching and crying that the President is discouraging people from boat ownership do you. Some people will just use any excuse to grab headlines and bitch for their 15 mins of fame. Oh and this... Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman said during a hastily called news conference that Obama is no friend to Las Vegas and would not be welcomed here if he visits. ... is just hysterical. I'd like to see him try to enforce that. He's the President, he can go anywhere he likes in the US with or without your permission, and those nice boys in the black suits will be happy to communicate that to you. What a complete dumb ass.
The guy is a jackass. Sounds like he already has a distaste for the president to begin with and took the comment as an opportunity to lash out.
HA! I'd like him to try that! You're right about that, he's the President! Shit, he was set a good example about Vegas, because you need money for college, instead of blowing all the money, because of this bad economy. I'm very surprised that Goodman said that he's not welcomed in Vegas. What a moron that he is, I'm very sure that he won't get another term, I bet you on that! I don't understand why he find that comment so offensive? What offensive comment that he finds? :smt104
Just another Obama hater, LMAO!! Sad to say, but Barack just isn't going to get tha automatic respect from jump from some white folks just because he's POTUS. Q: What do you call a Black man who's Commander in Chief of the U.S.? A: Nigga. The Las Vegas mayor can try to break bad with Obama, but if he had talked that yang with LBJ, Nixon, Reagan, Bush Sr. or Dubya, that would have been his ASS!! If I was Obama, I'd diss that MoFo and LV every chance I got. God Bless America!!
And just WHO the HELL is at all "surprised" by ANY of this? I, for one, am NOT! Damned Vegas dipshit...:smt067 OpinionsCartoonStudios@Yahoo.Co.UK
