They shouldn't, IMO those are the people who should get life without parole, or the death penalty. I also think that should be the case for premeditated murder. They took a life, they should lose theirs, either by life in prison or the death penalty. However that's not always the sentence they receive and so in cases like this where someone serves out their time, despite it being too short to fit the crime IMO, they've paid their debt. You can't try them for the same crime twice, they were judged, and their sentence carried out, there's nothing left to do but set them free. I agree it's unfair for him to be walking around free after depriving someone of their life, but that can't be fixed now. And yes Andrae, Jesus did advocate forgiveness, however the Bible is full of instances of 'an eye for an eye' as well, and murder is one of the 'Thou Shalt Nots' in the Big 10 too. A person can believe in the death penalty and be a Christian too, GZ and I agree on that.
well, eye for an eye was mainly of the old writ. the pervasive message concerning this would be, vengance is mine so sayeth the Lord. i do agree though that premeditated murderers should never see freedom again. and i am not against capital punishment, but that ain't right... it's just my lesser self sayin "off with their head." lol
I agree there are multiple messages concerning punishment in the Bible, and just FYI I don't happen to be one of the people who thinks the New Testament did away with the need to read and follow the Old Testament. However AdventurSum, I would submit that to me there is a difference between vengeance and justice. For example, the person carrying out a death penalty sentence likely feels no need for vengeance towards the person they are killing, they are merely exacting justice as dictated by the courts.
there is nothing in the new testament that said don't read the old testament. it said that by Jesus coming it removed a lot of the old ways of the Law set by man. and it allowed us to go straight to the Father through the Son. as far as the executor of the Law, i agree. that person is not exacting vengance but merely following through with the penalty set. if the Law says if a person kills someone that person will die by the hands of the establishment, then that's what it is. follow the rules or face the consequence.
In being Christian the idea is to live our lives following the ways of Christ and that's mainly an new testament endeavor. If we follow Christ I believe that he wouldn't want us taking anyones life. Jesus was a pacifist.
Less than a foot, but it still sucks. It had been in the 70s for about a week so I had plans to work in the flower beds this weekend... so much for that idea.
