http://www.sphere.com/nc/article/kfc-pulls-australian-tv-ad-amid-cries-of-racism/19308604 some more buck-dancin,' just for your sheer enjoyment
they killin us mayne this is almost as outrageous, as the 'popeyes done ran out of chicken' jawn back in the day straight fools in that
WHen the white dude held up the bucket of fried chicken to appease the 'natives' at the cricket match, and says, "too easy," I was like, WTF!!!?? It was sorta funny though 'cause whoever produced that commercial spot didn't get the racist overtones. Or maybe they did....? Well, we all know Denny's used to be called (little Black) Sambo's back in the 70s, right?? Time to peep Popeyes!!:smt110 In a twisted way, if that commercial had appeared as a sketch on the Chappelle show, it would have been hilarious!!
Thank goodness KFC does not sell Jerk Chicken in that commercial. I love to see a brother giving chicken to please guys who look like Mick Dundee.
i think i need to make it clear that most australians wouldn't know about the "black people and fried chicken" stereotype. kfc are sponsoring the cricket and the west indies cricket team have been here playing against australia. not supporting the commercial at all, it was 15 seconds of pure stupidity.
:smt120 ummmm...yeah. why would they? i've read some comments about the situation and feel some of it has some relevance to what i was trying to say. http://chattahbox.com/us/2010/01/05...e-fried-chicken-to-awkward-black-crowd-video/
Absolutely true. We do not have that same stereotype here and it would only be those of us interested in American culture, and those of us who have been to America, that know this as Aussies. America's culture, and its history, is not Australia's - it is a completely innocent (albeit stupid) ad.
the problem is, that kfc is an american companie and they know the stereotype. If I am not totaly wrong, they run a comercial in korea, where a korean is saving his life by offering some black cannibals fried chicken. If u don´t live in the states, u don´t know about that stereo type. Funny, I date americans since 11 years now and I was reading about this stereo type in this forum like a half year ago. :smt017
okay i feel i need to say something....the people who did the blackface jackson 5 thing (which i posted on this site) said: "I'm Sri Lankan-Australian, there's an Indian-Australian, a Greek-Australian, an Irish-Italian-Australian and a Lebanese-Australian. We're all Australian. I think the fact that all six of us have gone on to very successful careers as doctors demonstrates the fact that Australians care more about ability than race." yes in both cases it was in poor taste, but i think we need to readdress a few things, and we need to remember that not every country has the same history as america. i reacted to the "black face" scitt as soon as it happened because i thought it out of line and a disgrace. the kfc ad was nothing in the eyes of australians who have no history with african americans, and it has nothing to with us other than an ad for a fast food chain and our opponents. and off i gallop on my trusty kangaroo just after i've put a shrimp on the barbie and checked the length of my knife...any more stereotypes i've forgotten?
pretty tasteless, ignorant and short-sighted, for a bunch of talented 'doctors' wouldn't want to be going under the knife with any of them
The Sambo's chain went out of business years ago. Denny's however had a problem of serving Black patrons and paid a big price for it.
Sambo's IS Denny's, all they did is change their name. It's terrible how companies like KFC are exporting this nonsense to other countries, even if they have now history about the racial stereotypes. And it's not as if Australia doesn't have a race problem with dark skinned people. I've talked to many Black folks who had the misfortune of vacationing in that country and said it was a big mistake. And I think in most Western countries, it's considered bad taste to paint one's face 'black' to imitate Black performers. Those guys on that Aussie variety show may have been 'educated', but they were still dumb/ignorant.
Oddly enough...I'VE not had ANY problems AT ALL when I did visit Australia (Brisbane) ... albeit it was in 1989. It might have progressed in some areas...or even regressed since then. Who knows? AGREED! It's more like fuckin' STUPID, as far as I'm concerned.................. OpinionsCartoonStudios@Yahoo.Co.UK
