http://news.yahoo.com/kenyan-lawyer-offers-livestock-wed-obamas-daughter-report-150054452.html Hmm, interesting proposition for the FDOTUS
This random post pretty much summed up my actions "Straight to the comment section on this article" :smt005 At first I was like well, 16 is a marrying age in some cultures and girls were/are being given to men as brides at younger ages than that Then I read the part where he was clocking her when she was 10 years old and shit....even my understanding/tolerance of various cultures has limits
this is nothing uncommon. in some tribes in kenya girls are being married with 13. there is still some tribes there, that are very back in history and connected to old cultures and traditions. it s sort of surprising how they managed to keep that up with all that modernising at industrializing around them, but it still exists. after all i m not really surprised about this story. just like girls being married over there at such a young age, eventho it s forbidden by law, girls are still circumsised in certain area s there aswell. which is even more disgusting to me, then him being fancied by a 10 year old. whats most shocking to me is, that someone despite gaining some education and knowlege, which i suggest, since it s been said he s a lawyer, can still think and feel that way and believe it s ok in the end.
Cultural practices are so resistant to change, even in the face of education and science. I was thinking the same way about people contracting ebola because of funerary practices.
Education and culture are 2 different things. I am sure the some of the guys at FLDS who marry 13 year olds in UTAH are educated
You'd be surprised. The FLDS don't place value on education. They're on that 19th century, agriculturalist lifestyle. The reformed LDS are more modern (albeit just as ridiculous). I don't know, but I think that the scientific method carries with it its own brand of culture that devalues traditional practices unless they can be validated on a utilitarian basis. I try to follow it, especially in the face of practices that make no sense. I'm sure I fall short, though.
