Biden was chosen as a running mate because he was a Washington insider who would smooth the feathers of the party establishment who were nervous about the first black democratic candidate. Obama, more than likely still would have gotten elected if he chose any number of reassuring old school Democrats.

The main reason Joe Biden is currently the front runner is that a lot of people think he is the best chance for defeating Donald Trump. Nobody is actually excited about him, and we all remember what happened the last three times The Democratic party ran mediocre candidates ( Gore, Kerry, Clinton) "because at least they are better than the Republican alternative) they got beaten.

When you get a chance since the MSM isn't really covering it, look at the recently released BIPARTISAN Senate intelligence report on Russian interference in the 2016 election, confirmed the legitimacy of the Mueller report and the Russiagate anti-Trumpers.
