Jim "Mo-Fo" Brown...The Proverbial Angry Black Man

Jim Brown was very critical of Tiger Woods for not coming out earlier regarding the "lynching" statement made by The Golf Channel's Kelly Tilghman. He stated that Tiger should have come out immediately instead of waiting until it was "politically correct" to do so. He also went on to say that (black athletes) do have a responsibility to "speak up" when incidents like this take place.

I have an opinion on this, but I want to hear what others in this forum think of Jim Brown's assertion that Tiger Woods, as a black man and a role model, has a responsibility to speak up on certain issues?

Jim Brown is somebody I have a lot of admiration for. In this case I only half agree with him though. I think there is a responsibility to speak out, but I think that it should be up to the individual athlete on when to take issue with something. There are things that a lot of black people get up in arms about that I wouldn't personally lose any sleep over (such as the whole Don Imus thing.) Likewise, there are things that really piss me off that a lot of other black folks don't seem to notice. As long as a person stands for something they find personally important I think that's good enough. Your idea of activism may not be the same as mine and no one person can take up every issue every time.

If Tiger Woods genuinely wasn't offended by her remarks then that's all he should say on the matter. To do anything else would be phony on his part. He knew her intent, at most he could acknowledge that she put her foot in her mouth, but to feign outrage when he knows the anchor simply "fucked up" when she was choosing her words is not the way to go in my opinion. There are too many real racists out there saying and doing actual racist shit (mostly subtle and sometimes not so subtle) to expend energy on a (likely) non racist who misspoke.

This looks like another case of the media "creating" news where there really shouldn't be any. This is a back page story they're trying to turn into front page news just by talking about it endlessly. I see more offensive stuff on t.v. every day that the media completely ignores.

The facts that large numbers of black civilians (non gang members) are being murdered and forced out of neighborhoods in So.Cal by Mexican gangs is not getting any National Coverage. This should be on the front and back page of all of our newpapers. Although the media is not vocally saying the word "nigger" , their non coverage is screaming it in our collective faces. This should really offend black people. Fuck a golf reporter gaffe. If I were a pro athlete I would probably be talking about the situation with the blacks and Mexicans. The remark made by what's her name wouldn't even be on my radar. Unless she said something truly racist.

More on the Mexican on Black violence below-

I agree with you completely Petty Officer, I doubt Tiger Woods has any black friends always being surrounded by fellow golfers who are white.

If a black person associate him/herself with alot of white people it is very easy to forget you are a person of color unless they looks in the mirror.

    no seriously..

    lol..

i wasn't referring to the crowd he is always around, and the effects it has/had on him...

I thought I read something about him calling himself "cablasian" or something, instead of just saying he's black...since he is mixed

he can call himself whatever he want, but when people see the skin, the full lips, mofo, yo a$$ is black

that's why fuzzy said they better have some cornbread and fried chicken, for that foo..

    :)

Let's hope Tiger wakes up from that racial slumber.

If Tiger was half-black...maybe I could understand....but the man is only 1/4 black....he is more Asian (50%) than anything so maybe he should be in S.E. Asia protesting what was going on in Burma....or maybe protesting what happened to Bhutto in Pakistan.

Being part-black and part(insert other "minority") is different than being part-black and part-white. The idea of only claiming your black half if you are bi-racial (rule of hypodescent) was an idea that was based on the assumption that the other half was white. His case is unique so it's hard to pigeonhole him the way we do other mixed celebrities. His mother had a big hand in raising him....and he loves her very much. It would be disrespectful for him to go around calling himself black.

Tiger probably should have said something and shed some light on the negative connotations that come with the word 'lynch.' However...I don't see LeBron, Kobe, Michael Jordan, Shaq, T.O. or LaDainian Tomlinson out there fighting for black folks....and all of those Negroes are blacker than he is.

Tiger has never embarrased black folk (unlike O.J... Adam "Pac-Man" Jones...Kobe Bryant...Michael Vick...Mike Tyson...Rae Carruth...Flavor Flav...Travis Henry who had 9 kids with 9 women.....etc.) We need to show more outrage at those that defile us rather than one man that tries to help inner-city kids get to college and learn a game that had long been closed to us.

that was exactly what I was trying to get at...

we're looking at someone, who doesn't consider himself to be black, by standard definition, to step up against racism aimed at black people..

it would be a noble idea for him to do so, but slamming him because he's not standing up for his "brothas," is total bollocks.

As long as Tiger keep being responsible I have no problem.

Not to get off subject but Travis Henry having 9 kids with 9 different women??? The child support must be killing him!!!

    Talk about being greedy.

Yeah i knew about Travis Henry. That dude is such an irresponsible muthafucka. Y'all done said it best so i won't even go on and on with him.

But i'm sure you know that he (an NFL player) is running low that he had to borrow money from his ballclub coz child support was killing his black ass.

I'm suprised that doesn't get more play in the media...if he was a more prominent athlete...I bet it would be big news. If this was 1988 or 1998 instead of 2008...it would probably be more newsworthy. That's how you know things have degenerated....having 9 kids by 9 women doesn't put you too high on the "bad guy" list anymore.
