Sorry Rita you aren't in any position to talk about the black experience in Israel. The way I see the world at large treating anyone who is of a darker tone is enough evidence for me to believe that people of African descent are being treated like shit there.

    OK... Here we go.

The Beta Israelis have had a very difficult time in Israel. In my case this isn't something "I've heard" but some things that I experienced and many of my Ethiopian friends deal with. Personally, I have endured plenty of anti-black racism within the Jewish community growing up. Finding out about the struggles and issues that Beta Israelis, JOCs (Jews of Color), as well as Talmud interpretive issues that you find in the more frum circles is really just a click away. Israel, I must admit, is a different entity within itself. The amount of racism that I have experienced from I'd say 80% of the Israeli community that I've come into contact with is rather disheartening. I believe it stems from this idea that Ashkenazi is "the real Jewish Culture" and everyone else (Sefardi, Mizrahi, and so on) are just kind of bleh. But, I guess religion and religious cultures tend to have their issues. I will go as far as saying that I have experienced more kindness and far less racism from non-JOCs in the reform and conservative movements.

I would also like to add that because I happen to have brown skin the assumption is that I am "faux-jewish", because many believe that I am a hebrew-israelite or something along those lines. In addition to that, the religious circles break down the issues further regardless of skin color. It's broken down by how orthodox can you get? The Satmar are very closed off, the Orthodoxy is broken between the Orthodox and the Modern Orthodox and then the conservatives sometimes feel the reforms are wrong and I haven't even begun to bring in the Karaite (they don't follow the Talmud at all).

But, nonetheless, racism isn't knew in Jewish or Jewish-Israeli circles. But, of course I am only speaking from my JOC experience.

I'd also like to add that finding one's soul mate (Bashert if you enjoy the Yiddish) is very difficult for the average person, it somehow seems more difficult if you are Jewish, and seems damn near impossible if you are a Jewish person of color. But, I will leave my former Jewish dating experiences out of it for now.

Either way, if you are a Black man or woman who happens to be Jewish, your Jewishness is quite often in question. I kind of gave up on the communities about 5 years ago.
