I think the idea (sounding white) may not mean sounding white per se, but could be an euphemism for " you acting like you are better than us," and could be a disguise to ostracize and put down the speaker. I am a Nigerian so I might not have a full grasp of issues as it pertains to the United States. Nevertheless, I come from a country that has a diverse ethnic population that I would refer to as over 300 ethnic nationalities even though to some black is black, yet the human computer has culture as its operating system that enables perceive things differently. The idea of sounding white to me seems flawed in many respects. One aspect of the flaw is the assumption that all 'white' people have English as their indigenous language that the statement embraces. Maybe in United States that is the case, but in Europe that is not clearly the case. The question then arises, why associate speaking English to being white? I guess this where the logic does not sync for me. For all of America's strengths and its ideals, it is humbling to realise that she still evokes many practices reminiscent of practices in the third world , and so much of what obtains in many other multi-ethnic societies who are racially seen as the same are familiar in America

I hear this BS all the time. If I'm not talking white, I think white, I act white. I just let go a so-called friend of mine who made the remark that I'm trying too hard to be white to fit in because I want to get my masters degree. I will not ever again let my own hold me back or hold me down.
