All the men you mentioned have done much for their field but with exception of Bill Cosby, who is an entertainer who made black families look great in the 80s, didn't/don't have much crossover appeal. As much as I personally admire Tyson(dude played a part in declassifying a planet and has a show on PBS) he is not a household name like Barak Obama. Dude is basically a rock star and an amazing role model for all children not just black ones. To be honest I would have prefered that someone like Powell be the first black President. That motherfucker is teflon I dare anyone to dispute having someone like him during war time in control of the country. But I digress like I said Obama is great for the normalization of black people into the fold of the American fabric and normalization is acceptence. Kind of like with Italians and the Irish, it took them a long time to be accepted as well and had it not been for blacks being the more noticeable occupiers of the bottom of barrel they still would be.

As for fringe extremists, I totally agree the loud mouths are what make it bad for everyone but unfortunately they get the most attention and it doesn't help the cause when most libertarians that I speak to if not all have the same fuck you pull yourself up by the bootstraps attitude Republicans have. They are completely unreasonable and refuse to see the other side of an argument. It's a constant rhetoric of get off your ass stop being lazy and let the market place fix itself because the job creators will provide jobs if we make government smaller and make them less jobs. Even though all evidence shows that the so called job providers outsource as much as possible while hiking prices on the American populus they depend on for profit but fuck over for employment. They seem to lack total compassion as long as their situation is good and suffer from the same deluded thinking of keeping the rich rich because they think one day they too will be rich.

Colin Powell had him beat long ago. No offense to Obama, just saying that, imo, Powell displayed all that and more before Obama hit the scene. I wish he had run and been elected president back when there were rumors of him doing so.

Edit: I saw that you made the same point in a later post. Didn't read all the way through the thread.

Fair assessment there. No arguments from me.

    You do that Jethro.

I actually take great fondness of Powell. He's a level-headed person.

Interracial marriages have risen, but the highest number is between white and Hispanic.

Not running rampant, but in my area, yes. Puerto Rican and white or black pairings are not unusual since there is a large populatiion of Puerto Rican families here.

See that's the thing its not often obviously recognizable as a black man walking with a white woman or white man walking with an Asian woman, etc.

That's because of the fact that as some have mentioned Hispanic is not a race, but a cultural identity, so they run the color gamut. It may not be obvious at first glance if a very light skinned Hispanic woman, who essentially identifies as white is seen with a white man we may think hmm a white couple.

There are blacks not only in obvious places like Brasil, Colombia, Venezuela but also in places like Ecuador, Uruguay, Peru. They would be Hispanic as much as the Europeans that settled in those places and mixed with the natives.

Hispanic is not a race? Well on job applications the want to know if you are black, white or Hispanic, race or not.

Hispanics get a pass.... In the bigger scheme of things, they can claim their Hispanic culture but are counted as "White" since they aren't "Black".... Generally speaking....

For companies, hiring Hispanics (under the white/black/other) banners allows companies to fulfill the "minority" hiring "quota", thereby qualifying for tax relief without truly diversifying... Happened all the time in San Antonio, Texas... There a minority business gets a federal/state/city contract.... but the minority was 99.9% hispanic....

If given only two choices, most Hispanics will select white.

I think Obama arrived at his moment of presidency because of the social shift. So many things can be said to be responsible, at least in the United States. The growing proportion of middle class blacks in the Ivies and the encroachment of rap music into suburban life, were there has been a wholesome embrace of the music, this could have caused a structural collapse of the old social order, and the birth of a new social order.

Obama's influence in all these can't be discounted though. He has now become the face and the spirit of a new social configuration. For example racist ideologies on intelligence would find it hard to make sense now that Obama has shown tremendous amount of brain power at his job. I think his type of black man is a new reference point, even though they have always existed, but were not given enough air time.

Has any one else noticed that jobs apps now have the option to select two or more races?

That's due to political correctness. Just giving anyone who's caught up in it too much proper options.
