The few can rule the many, and demographics can be altered in a number of ways. There won't be a separate class if Hispanics are defined as, or more importantly acculturated as White.

In Congress, census numbers are used as 'proof' or 'evidence' to justify the success/failure of particular programs, or how well or poorly a socio-economic group is performing.

There's a huge trickle down from census numbers and it affects all kinds of government policy, good and bad.

Long range unintended demographic and public policy consequences occur when ethnic/racial groups lie on the census.

There's two ideas here, one that Hispanics claiming White status as a currently marginalized group will undermine their political influence, the other is that the Hispanic ethnicity will be merged into White status like the ethnic Europeans of last century. The merging in the later negates the undermining in the former, but that's if you believe Hispanics will eventually be classified as White. I'm guessing you don't believe that given the they will learn the hard way quote.

Saying you're 'White' as a hispanic doesn't change the actual status of that population in this country.
But it does allow lawmakers to make statistical assumptions about that group which could potentially disadvantage them more than they already are.

I think White status in this formulation involves a complicity of current Whites to assign White status in every aspect of social life, thus providing a come up for Hispanics, and added numbers for Whites.
