Amen but me and friend discussed this and it made me think.
Does this help or hurt us a whole. Will we look at them exceptional or use them as another reason to shun and dismiss the poor? If (insert name here) then why can't you pull yourself up by the bootstraps too. It's hard to not have the thought.

Damn, I was all excited when I read the article below and ran here to post it when I read your sobering post above. That's a good point. You don't want the "Obama Syndrome" to paralyze every kid who isn't capable of reaching these heights, or create some sort of false evaluation standard that then is used to demand that every kid reach these heights to be considered worthy of recognition and support. I need to mull this one over...

    17-Year-Old Graduates From College!
    Aug 8, 2013 - By NewsOne Staff

While most 17-year-olds are contemplating which college they plan on attending next fall, James Martin is thinking about where he wants to attend graduate school.

WSVN-TV 7 reports that Martin, of Marimar, Fla., just received his bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from Florida Atlantic University (FAU) during a ceremony Tuesday. The baby-faced teen was by far the youngest graduate in his class of 1000 other students; he was also one of the most accomplished, finishing with a 3.9 GPA.

“James Martin, Suma Cum Laude,” said announcer at the the ceremony. That he is so young is a fact that does not elude the young scholar.

“It’s funny, because I have a really young face, so they all knew this kid doesn’t belong here,” Martin said. “They end up seeing you almost as a peer because you study like they do, you work like they do and at the same time, you’re interacting.”While Martin is clearly a super-talented young man, his mother, who home-schooled him as a child, admits that her son was not always so studious. “His early years, he tended to be a little lazy,” said Joan Martin. “He daydreamed a lot and then, about 12 or 13, he started getting really serious.”

Martin was so serious that his improved habits landed him on FAU’s campus at 14-years-old. It was a successful journey that didn’t go without its challenging moments, however. “It’s been some nights, man,” he said. “It’s been some nights where I’m just like, ‘Ugh!’”

While Martin is not sure of what his next steps will be, he does eventually want to pursue higher education.

“In a couple years, hopefully, I’ll be on my way to getting a PhD, and so that would be a tremendous blessing,” he said. “In another eight years, I’ll be a professor somewhere.”

Congratulations to another fine young man doing great things!

I remember reading this article awhile ago and it just made my morning! I love seeing young brothers excelling in education. I know first hand that African parents take their kids' education VERY seriously and I could just imagine how stern this kid's parents were. We need more African-American parents to invest more into their children's education. The American public 'Fools' system just isn't cutting it!

I was thinking the same thing. That's why everyone thinks they're so damn suspect.

Does anyone have any more uplifting stories like this to post? I could use a little bit of uplift going into the weekend.

The frequency of black immigrant community success reminds me of what the Black Panthers said about African-Americans realizing that we are an internal colony and acting collectively the same way immigrant communities do.

I always dig getting to learn little bits of African culture from friends from the continent.

We can learn a lot from them, just work hard and stay completely focused. Certain things suck and we should address them as they come up but I am so over all the focus on swag and entertainment. Everyone can't be Jay-Z but a shit ton of us can be great surgeons and engineers. The resources are there we just need to be crafty. I am so sick of hearing about how bad the schools are and how bad the books are. Books and schools are antiquated concepts. Instead of Jordans buy these damn kids tablets, two of them. One to study with and another to take apart and rebuild from scratch. If I can set myself up financially hunger, housing, and education will be my life's mission. Shit does not and should not be this way.
