What did the Irish ever do to France? Yep, l posted the WH reeponse link a page back http://www.whitewomenblackmen.com/forum/showpost.php?p=938673&postcount=86 TBH, I think Carter is just trying to proverbially save face for the Preeident, because unlike during his time, terrorism came to our country and changed the way we live for the last 14 years. Terrorism is still a battle that we haven't won. There is nothing on his desk that would be more pressing then to put on a brave face and show not just the world that we don't fear them, but to the terrorists as well. When I saw the photos, my visceral feeling was please have been in it or at least the VP. It was important on so many levels to show visual support.
I appreciate that symbolism is important to many. But does anyone doubt the US's support for France and anti-terrorism? I don't believe it was the French complaining. If Obama had spent the day parading around the streets of France he would have been criticised. As would have Bush and Clinton. Damned if you do; damned if you don't. 24/7 cable news and a society obsessed with political controversy will criticize everyone for breathing - turn it into a "scandal." Personally, I'm less into symbolism and more into an administration getting down to business. Rather see him sweating in the strategy room than kissing French babies on the left bank
BTW I think it was a brilliant PR move on the part of the administration to respond to the criticism by saying "it was fair." Talk about take the wind out of the sails ... makes the criticisers seem petty. The "controversy" look ludicrous. An "emperor has no clothes" in reverse ....
I think the most effective - symbolic - person to lead an anti-terrorism parade in France would be a muslim cleric. If you want to send a message ... to the target audience ...
I am sure the president made a phone call about this incident. I am sure that the two leaders did speak. They often do. I am sure that they understand what it means and I am sure they both have an understanding, even as allies.
How will they rename "French Fries" over there? Perhaps "grease-laden potato strips responsible for widening Yankee butts"?
French fries were originally called pomme frits(fried potatoes) in Europe back in the 19th century. So, the French own the title. Look at the film Time After Time when Malcolm McDowell as H. G. Wells visits McDonald's and he is eating a Big Mac and an order of fries. He mentions the fries by saying as he examines a fry, "Pomme frits? Fries as pomme frits?" That was classic.
"Vinyl" Totally, great film! I've always wondered if it galled the French that the US named them 'French Fries'.
Yawn. The Right is always trying to penny-pinch Obama, just as they always exaggerate about "Moochelle's" deluxe vacations. You act like there's actual reason behind their criticism. Nevertheless, POTUS made the right decision. And fuck you, "idiocy."
I agree. How many days did Bush spend "clearing brush" in Texas instead of working? How much time at Kennebunkport? I don't mind stringent criteria for evaluating a presidency, but apply them evenly.
Cool. Thanks for the clarification, Bliss. Either way, I still can't get enough of them sometimes. In my high school French class, our instructor asked everyone in class to prepare a French dish. I blurted out, "The only thing I could make at home are French toast and French fries." The class laughed. I remember that my mother couldn't give me the money to buy the ingredients to make a French dish. So, I brought in a tea kettle and tea bags. I am sure that the French drank tea. My instructor and her husband the band director drank the tea.
Well do tell.. how many did he take? I didn't see your post (was posting same time as you)...so I wasn't correcting you...it was an independent comment. I head read that somewhere. @ bringing tea for your French class...well, I don't know what to say... except perhaps the Poms invented it? Or maybe it was the Chinese
From Politifact "On Aug. 8, 2014, Knoller tweeted that Obama had taken 19 vacations totaling 125 days so far while in office. Those numbers have risen a bit due to the Martha’s Vineyard vacation, but that’s still many fewer than George W. Bush’s 65 combined trips to his Texas ranch and his parents’ home in Kennebunkport, Maine, which totaled 407 days at the same point in his presidency." And the disparity remained throughout the remainder of 43's presidency.
