Never said they did but comparing what progressives do to what conservatives do is like comparing a car accident to a category 5 hurricane.

Like many other remarks, simply declaring it to be a fact doesn't make it one. I stand by my statement that the term hillbilly is not a racial slur. Not was it clever to throw in the comment about Celts not being considered white. I was a term coined by whites in reference to other white people, regardless of your spin.

It would seem that people would to whom it's applied would ALL agree if it was a slur, as in the case of the "N" word as applied to black people. Not only do reference sources not support your statement, at least one other woman poster agrees that it's not a racist term either.

By the way, calling a black person "ghetto" has never been considered a racist term by any people I have known. In fact, much like "hillbilly" it's often applied to people of any race who exhibit certain characteristics.

Hillbilly isn't a racist term, it's one which refers to geography, and a stereotypical behavioural pattern found in that geographical region. It's akin to calling me a Yankee because I grew up in New England. Yankee also has some "negative" inferences, such as stiff-necked pride, unfriendliness to strangers, etc. etc.

But I am indeed a New England Yankee.

I said as much in my first response to her, but as normally occurs, she tries to find a way to win the day. Even to the point of stating that Celts weren't considered white during the time the term was coined. In this way, she thought no one could counter her by saying that it was a term coined by white people referring to other white people.

Of course, in the South, you should know that if you remained in the South and never returned to the North you would be considered a "damn Yankee". But, it still wouldn't be a racial slur by any stretch of the imagination.

Exactly. The Irish were considered "lesser" because they were Catholic - that was religious bigotry, not an ethnic or racial one. The Scots, on the other hand, had a whole lotta folk involved in the US right from the founding, including a number of the founding fathers.

If only the Democrats *were* progressive. They're more like the Republicans of the 1950s. Hell, NIXON was to the left of some of today's Democrats.

And the Republicans went from people like Gerald Ford to bat-shit crazy. They aren't even Conservatives anymore, they're just nuts.

As often as the Republicans like to hold up the banner that they are the party of Abraham Lincoln, do you think that Lincoln would recognize the Republican party of today?

I agree with you folks. Hillbilly, redneck, backwoods, hick, bumpkin, country, etc. aren't racial slurs by any means. I have many family members who I call those things, & it has NOTHING to do with them being white & everything with them being uncouth in behavior, speech, backwards thinking & sometimes in their appearance. I have cousins whose home looks like it's the set from "Hee Haw".

    I think he'd be horrified.

BTW.. small derail, there's a great series of alternative history novels by a guy named Harry Turtledove which begins after the Civil War, which posits the south winning, and Lincoln becoming a Socialist after losing the election. The series really picks up @ WWI, but the back story includes Lincoln heading up the Socialist party. IIRC by the time WWI starts, the two main parties in the US are the Socialists and the Democrats.

Thanks Tam. In the continuing war against the Jethros and Jethrines, it's good to have a fair minded and thoughtful ally.

Interesting discussion that's gone on here.

Anyways, I just want to contribute my findings about bi-racial children based on what I found from doing some research. Please don't attack me for the things I'm going to post here.

Much of that research is nearly 20 years old, or older. Anything more recent which validates this?

I guess I will take a look and read to see if I would find anything. I made a post a while ago saying that the people who organize the US Census have the ultimate say on what they deem bi-racial children to be. They may just simply acknowledge them as being "multiracial" or "biracial" with no specified ethnicity in the next census in 2020.

You're welcome & thank you, Swirl; I appreciate that. An alliance with someone with sense & comprehension is an easy choice for me to make. :smt023
